4.5 This is not a feel good book, but I think it is an important book. I learned so much about the history of colonialism and the horrors wrought on Indigenous Americans, way more than I ever did in school.
I recommend this book if you want to know the truth about how the US came into being.

A beautifully horrifying read. Should be required reading for all people living in the United States.
The author provides an extremely detailed account of the violent colonization of what we now call the United States. The book connects the atrocities committed against the indigenous people to the current military actions across the globe. My only struggle with the book was that at some points it became a bit tangential and jumped around. This is necessary reading for anyone who lives in the US.

This is such a thorough and well laid out history of the Americas. As so many others have stated, it exposes the lies and ‘whitewashed’ history Americans have learned in school for centuries. US history is full of betrayals and atrocities but thankfully also full of people who resisted and continue to resist.
I really appreciated Dunbar-Ortiz’s use of language. I am so on board with this move away from value-connected words to the more blunt and honest options. Call America what it was and is, a colonizing imperialistic nation which carried out genocide and continues to be highly complicit, if not fully active, in genocides that help in their 21st century version of colonialism.
