An amazing journey through American Black history, overlaying generations of slaves, share croppers, plantation owners. The author delivers the horror of the child, women and man sexual abuse in a way that for me, forced me to examine and question EVERYTHING about what I have previously been taught. The telling is harrowing, horrific, and dark because there is REAL human struggle and incredible sadness to reflect on. There were also beautiful and lighthearted pieces of family relationships that kept bringing me back to the central truth- the legacy of family and joy was torn from the Native Americans and those trafficked to America on slave ships. There is no reconciliation for the generations of grief and loss to these people. I really learned a lot in this book. It took a month and half to listen by audio since it’s 30 plus hours of listening!

Rounded up from 3.5 stars. This book was soooo much longer than it needed to be. Oh, the minutiae! When a book spans 200 years and has a roster of characters that reads like a phone book, structure is everything. This was all over the place in time and I had to refer back to the (confusing) family tree all the way up to the last few pages. Call me lazy, I just don't want to work that hard when I'm reading for enjoyment. Parts of it were really good and gripping but overall a fairly exhausting read.

Stunning. The kind of book that I'll carry around in my head for a long time.
What a painful yet beautiful read. Interesting that the author’s intent was womanist and feminist as the overall theme. It was also historical, romance, family, trauma, and more. I’m in awe of the storytelling, in places gut wrenching, in others nostalgic and honoring. It’s a very long read. I did notice that. However, I’m sure I will be rereading this at some point.
