I listened to this book, which I would not normally do because it is so long and it skips around in time. However, with the different narrators, it was quite compelling and so beautiful. This is an incredibly gorgeous novel, with characters that break your heart and make you smile and feel like a friend. It is also insanely well researched, though it is all fiction. So good.
This was both a wonderful and difficult read. There is a lot of trauma that the characters experience, but it is well written and kept me coming back to find out what happened.
This book was a very detailed account of the life the Garfield family, their ancestors and how they came to be. Stories are complicated, interesting and very painful at times just like life. The book's pace is slow so I'd recommend not reading it after a thriller (which I did) otherwise you have to be patient to get absorbed into the book. The book is 800 pages which equals to about 37 hrs of the audio version. I gave the book 3 stars because it got boring at times and it was hard to listen past those parts. I appreciate that the author did a wonderful job of explaining everything and showing the complicatedness of life but still there were parts that I lost interest.
Reading this book, it becomes very much apparent that racism has existed from a long time ago and from different races against each other and even within one race. I liked when I read the intricacies related to this matter. The confusions and questions that arise in the minds of children were also shown in the book.
There were a few accounts of pedophilia in the book too so please be aware of this when you want to start the book.

It’s just so long. I have to come at it in parts and then just never returned
Epic! An amazing accomplishment- for the author and for me, as a reader. The stories, the trauma, the research are truly mind blowing and heart building. Anyone who chooses to read this story must prepare themselves for every emotion and when you think you know something, be prepared to learn more. This book is now one of my favourites and as I’ve said, it may be at the top of that stack. This was a combined effort of reading the text and listening to the audiobook. Highly recommended!
