I would give this a 4.5 if I could! This was a really great book. Such beautiful insight and well-developed characters. The writing was lovely. The only challenging part was the length (800 pages!), which at times made it difficult to keep track of the many characters. Overall, I loved it!
I have a friend that is a poet. When she writes ANYTHING her words just seem to melodically rise and float from the page, through your mouth as if from an (musical) instrument. She just writes different, with heart even-everything she writes. Her writing executes with deliberate conceit, to be heard and felt at the bone on purpose and without caution. This is what happens when a poet writes a novel: The Love Songs of W.E.B. Dubois is what happens when a poet has a story to tell. Read this book. Your body will buzz and burn with anger. Your chest will heave and catch with anticipation. Your feelings will be hurt, and at once your heart will be broken, but you will be grateful that you've made the journey.
