It's a long book, but it doesn't feel long. The beauty of the author's words combined with an innate detail with her storytelling easily paints a picture in my mind. The author allows me to sympathise with her characters, my heart skips beats in anticipation, my eyes water at low points, and my breath is held during changes.

Beautiful book that reflects both the present and the past, all neatly crafted together.

BOOK HANGOVER.

I miss Ailey.

I miss Uncle Root.

I miss so many of these characters. And I still can't believe they aren't real people.

Full review to come. BRB, trying to figure out what to do with my life because I'm absolutely lost after reading this book.

I loved everything about this book. The storyline across the generations was amazing. The different looks into past and present provide further insight into the main character. Just an all around good read!

I didn't finish this book, I got really tired of Ailey, her stupid antics, teenage sex, dorm room conversations. If you want a better family insight novel, read Free Food for Millionaires.

Hard to say why exactly, but as well-written as this clearly is, I had a hard time motivating myself to spend time with it. Good book, took me forever, wasn't excited to pick it up until the last 100 pages or so.

historical family saga

Going into this one I didn’t realize it was 800 pages, but let me tell you it was worth it. This book was beautiful; an epic saga that covered different generations of an African American family and their history from slavery through the early 2000s. Each generation was fascinating and rich with its characters, plot lines and story telling and brought me from humor and hope to absolute heartbreak. Loved this one and would recommend. This is a book you sink into.
