I've read most of McCall Smith's books and enjoyed all so far, the many different series and stand alone books but with this series they are just not that enjoyable. This is the second one and after the first I thought they would get better but they are not that interesting, not much happens and it just plods along. I may have to give up.
This book fell flat for me. The premise is delightful (and the type of story I generally adore), but this whole book felt 2-dimensional and rushed. There was very little character development or even story development. It even ended abruptly. Disappointing.
I love this. His aunt Chloe is such a feisty, fun character. Sad it felt a little sped up towards the end.
Loved a few liners in the book, especially the one early on that said "to be a lover was easy enough; to be a friend required more. To be both was something not given to everyone."

Less arch, I think, than [b:My Italian Bulldozer|30236772|My Italian Bulldozer|Alexander McCall Smith|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1463698885l/30236772._SY75_.jpg|50698640] (maybe the flavor of France vs. flavor of Italy?). Smith's observation of quirky characters is the prime fun of this series.
I was reading this book on my kindle. When it finished i thought there was something wrong with the app. It felt like we had only got half way through the book and the story was just getting going. I enjoyed the descriptions of France. This book was transporting. The conversations are brought to life by the diverse characters. I enjoyed reading it. But it didn't feel like the story did the rest of this book justice.
