AHH This was good. The title and cover make it seem like mostly romance (the novella that introduced the world was, for the most part)--and don't get me wrong, the romance is really well done--but the universe this is set in and the story surrounding it was a real pleasure to read and the romance was just one part of a larger picture. Loving the mythology, adored the MC, enjoyed reading the other characters (realistic and actually evoked some emotion from me). The plot was interesting, the climax was satisfying, and the ending! Where is the next book! AHH!
Basically, it was everything I enjoy about this kind of book. I'm not really bothered by authors using popular tropes (sorry, if you are, you are probably in the wrong genre), as long as they put a fresh spin on it. Looking forward to more.
Oh, also: extra points for not writing main characters that I spent most of the book wanting to punch or shake some sense into. Because so many times there's some MC who I end up liking eventually after some character growth, but in the meantime, GAH I spend most of the time just wanting to punch them. I actually LIKED these people and I wasn't stressed out reading about them. How refreshing!
