2.5 maybe 3 stars. It wasn’t completely horrible considering I got through the entire thing. Then again I hate DNF-ing a book.
It came out in 2014 and it shows. I’m sure I would have eaten it up back then.

So Band 1 wiederholt, jetzt kann ich mit Band 2 weiter machen! *-*
Supernatural Spin-off? YES!!! Unexpectedly good!

WOW, did I just say this book was good? I didn't expect it would be good, but this book is...quite amazing!
My Synopsis:
Layla was half Warden and half demon. She had been adopted by Abbot, a Warden, when she was a kid. One day, she got caught up in an alley facing a demon. Another handsome (so as she said) demon sort of rescued her. It turned out that that demon went to her school. Layla lived a live between Wardens and a demon. She later found out who her parents were and why there were a lot of demons trying to kill her.
Bookpick:
I didn't remember why I picked up this book, but I'm really glad that I read it. This book is full of supernatural stuff. (I freaking love Supernatural.) The action scenes are good and real. The story wasn't told as 'the characters are all super strong and they win every fight'.

The Setting:
The story was set place in Washington D.C. I've never been there, but I know it's a big city. I have the basic idea of Washington D.C. thanks for news and TV series. The fictional places in this book are well-described. I felt that I was really there. Adventurous and excited. I'm not talking about Roth's place.
The Characters:
Layla the Bug: I don't hate Layla, but her weird nickname from Zayne was pretty horrible. If someone's gonna call me Remi-bug, I'll ask them to call me cockroach instead. Layla broke the rules all the time. She was the stereotype main character.
Q: Hello Layla, I wonder how you look like...
A:

Q: So...what ARE you exactly, Layla?
A:

Zayne the Stony: Okay. This gargoyle thing is all new to me. It's interesting that they were somehow like the police. However, it seemed to me that they killed every demon they encountered. Zayne should really care about Layla like a brother, but he didn't. (and Hell. why couldn't Layla see it? everyone could see it) He was very protective and caring.
![]()
Zayne possibly looked just like this when he shifted.
Roth the Prince: Astaroth, the Prince of Hell. (and I couldn't help thinking about Crowley the King of Hell when I was reading it) Roth was the bad boy. He kept a load of weird minds. However, he did seem to care about Layla. I have to say 'seem to' because we all know...demons lie all the time.
Q: Hello again mule, I mean, Layla. I want to ask you what Roth looks like.
A:
![]()
I was wondering why Roth didn't look like this. After all, he was the Prince of Hell. We all know that Crowley was the King of Hell... If Roth looked like this, bang! he would be the so-called crush material.
Q: Hey Roth, you stepped on my foot!
A:
Okay. This is new. I didn't know that demon couldn't say sorry. However, it would be super fun to keep telling Roth to say sorry. He had to practice his pronunciation.
Q: Okay. So what are you, really? A Prince?
A:
This is the saddest part. It's sad that Roth wasn't real or original. Downstairs, they didn't really care about him. If he died, there would be another Roth who looked exactly like him and talk exactly like him. They just needed another Roth to fill in the 'Prince' position.
Stacey: Stacey was a girl who like to talk about boys with her best friend. She was a good friend because she was always okay with Layla being a no-show.
Q: Hello Stacey! How's your bio class?
A:
You see, Stacey was a little bit crazy, but she was definitely a nice friend. You can tell her that you're gonna hang out with her every evening and disappear on her after 10 minutes of hanging out.
Sam: Sam stood for Samuel not Samantha. He was a guy with lots of random knowledge. I believe that he and Sheldon Cooper have a lot to talk about.
![]()
Abbot: Abbot was the leader of D.C. clan, as gargoyles' clan. He was like a father to Layla, but he was very very strict. Like...very.
Poor Layla. However, if it was me, I'd choose to be a demon instead. Gargoyles look...scary.
Let's Get Into Some Details:
Layla had the ability of seeing souls. She could also take away people's souls if she wanted.
I think we all have the idea of the face...

No doubt. Lord Voldemort look.

Oh no!!! Cas and Dean just sprang into my mind! I couldn't get Supernatural out of my head when I read this book. It's not a bad thing tho.
See??? Supernatural fan-fiction? I remember the part where Sam okayed Dean, Dean said 'don't okay me', and then Sam replied with the same okay!!!

Right. There was Lord Voldemort and now we have Nagini. I'm not afraid of snakes. Nonetheless, a big snake shows affection toward me?...uh, no thanks.
Star-Rating & Recommendation:
I unexpectedly gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. It was a good read. I recommend to everyone who likes to read demon stuff and people who like to watched Supernatural.
Happy Reading, guys ~ :D

Q: Hello Layla, I wonder how you look like...
A:
Zayne said I looked like the long-lost sister of the elf in Lord of the Rings.
Q: So...what ARE you exactly, Layla?
A:
"I'm more like a...like a mule."
"A mule?" he repeated slowly, brows furrowing.
"Yeah, a mule. You know, half horse, half donkey-"
"I know what a mule is, Layla. And I really hope you're not comparing yourself to one."
Zayne the Stony: Okay. This gargoyle thing is all new to me. It's interesting that they were somehow like the police. However, it seemed to me that they killed every demon they encountered. Total crush material -- if it wasn't for the fact that he had no soul.
I was wondering why Roth didn't look like this. After all, he was the Prince of Hell. We all know that Crowley was the King of Hell... If Roth looked like this, bang! he would be the so-called crush material.
Q: Hey Roth, you stepped on my foot!
A:
"I'm...sorr-ree."
"Oh give me a break. You can't say I'm sorry?"
"No." He looked me straight on, serious. "It's not in a demon's vocab."
Okay. This is new. I didn't know that demon couldn't say sorry. However, it would be super fun to keep telling Roth to say sorry. He had to practice his pronunciation.
Q: Okay. So what are you, really? A Prince?
A:
"An identical replacement." He laughed humorlessly. "Each Roth before me looked just like me, talked like me and was probably almost as charming. So yeah, I'm a replacement."
A:
"Our bio class just got a billion times more interesting. And hotter, lots and lots hotter. Holy mother, I want to have his babies. Not now of course, but definitely later. But I'd like to start practicing soon."
You see, Stacey was a little bit crazy, but she was definitely a nice friend. You can tell her that you're gonna hang out with her every evening and disappear on her after 10 minutes of hanging out.

I made a face. "Can't we say 'marry'? Saying 'mate' out loud just sounds gross."
"This isn't your world, Layla. I wouldn't expect you to understand."
Poor Layla. However, if it was me, I'd choose to be a demon instead. Gargoyles look...scary.
Let's Get Into Some Details:
All human had a soul -- an essence -- good or bad, but demons weren't rocking any such thing.
Layla had the ability of seeing souls. She could also take away people's souls if she wanted.
The eyes were oval-shaped and churned like an endless sea -- no pupils. The nose was flat, really just two holes above a wide cruel mouth.
I think we all have the idea of the face...
No doubt. Lord Voldemort look.
"Do you know anything about personal space?"
Oh no!!! Cas and Dean just sprang into my mind! I couldn't get Supernatural out of my head when I read this book. It's not a bad thing tho.
"Okay."
"Don't 'okay' me." I took a deep breath.
"Okay."
I shot him a glare.
See??? Supernatural fan-fiction? I remember the part where Sam okayed Dean, Dean said 'don't okay me', and then Sam replied with the same okay!!!
I started to respond, but Bambi slithered up and placed its horse-sized head on my shoulder. Every muscle in my body locked up and I squeezed my eyes shut. There was a puff of air, stirring the hair along my temple. Bambi's forked tongue shot out, tickling the side of my neck.
"Hey, look, Bambi likes you."
Right. There was Lord Voldemort and now we have Nagini. I'm not afraid of snakes. Nonetheless, a big snake shows affection toward me?...uh, no thanks.

4 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“I lost myself the moment I found you.”
Hot White Kiss welcomes you to the world of Demons and Wardens. It's the first installment of the Dark Elements promising a solid plot and an action-packed adventure sprinkled with spicy romance.
Intorducing Layla. A 17-year-old in a peculiar situation for she is neither human, nor a whole Demon or a whole Gargoyle/Warden. What marks her uniqueness is the fact that she is half Demon and half Gargoyle.
Due to being different from everyone else, she feels inferior especially considering the fact that she was raised among Wardens, a race of Gargoyles with a pure soul, whose job is to hunt Demons and ensure humanity's safety.
Layla actively pursues demons in hopes of fitting in with the Wardens. However, Layla's demonic bloodline is brimming within her to the point she cannot always hide the darkest side of her. Layla's kiss would kill anything with a soul.
Zayne, a 21-year-old Warden and Layla's dearest childhood friend is the subject of her attraction until a mysterious and wicked demon called Roth comes into the picture.
Layla is thrust into a web of schemes involving a demonic rebellion and plans to set the Apocalypse in motion and that she may be the key to all of it.
For most of her life, Layla was led by one belief planted by the Wardens in her that all demons deserve to be punished without question.
Roth helps Layla view demons in a different light and she is torn between fulfilling her role as a Warden or embrace the powerful bloodlines coursing through her.
I was looking for a book that will keep me entertained throughout the entirety of it, and White Hot Kiss did exactly that!
I've experienced a story that had little bits of everything and it stays true to its genre, the YA tropes used were fitting for the nature of the story. The unique assortment of engaging storytelling, gripping action scenes, swoon-worthy romance, and the dash of comedy made it out to be a strong introduction to the trilogy.
The characters were likable and I enjoyed all of their scenes because they all had their moment of spotlight.
Layla is a teenager and acted as such. She is someone with a strong wel yet a carries vulnerable heart. Her inferiority makes her want to gain the recognition that she is indeed a good enough of a Warden and wipe any traces of her demonic heritage.
Roth is the star of the book. He is delightfully wicked and has many iconic lines and moments in the book. I totally understand why he is such a popular character and love interest.
Zayne may get on my nerves at times but he is such a likable character and his sweetness just makes my heart melt. I love how he is dotting on Layla.
Let's speak of the spicy Romance that is the highlight of the book for me. Despite it being YA, the level of spice in the romance is good and it's so fitting for the couple because Layla is the curious sort and led by what she desires and Roth holds nothing back. The chemistry between them was instantly boiling and my oh my. His banter with Layla is the cherry on top, I live for it.
I'm excited to see what will unfold in the sequel because if the first book offered this much then I know the sequels will give me more and more!

I did not care for the very beginning with all the high school drama but it is a ya book not written for an adult . Layla is a half breed born from a demon mother and a warden father. The leader of the wardens brought her to live with them and raise her after she was abandoned. She is good friends with the top wardens son. She has special powers but everything changes after her 17th birthday. There is an incantation that she is needed to unleash. Roth the prince of hell is sent above to help and protect her. Can they prevent the race of deadly demons being recreated and find out who is behind it before it’s too late?
I loved the characters and the plot flowed nicely. The ending broke my heart and now I’m rushing to the next book.

I finally read a Jennifer L. Armentrout book and I honestly thought it was meh. There were parts I enjoyed and other parts that I just wanted the book to be over
White Hot Kiss is a fun read. The writing made the story addicting which helped me fly through this book. I will say that this book reads more like older YA. It is a paranormal YA urban fantasy that deals with demons and gargoyle and our main character is Layla a girl who is half demon half gargoyle and the only one who is which makes her special and is torn between two hot boys. Yep sounds stereotypical but despite that, it has been quite a long time since I read a book with this type of synopsis and in a way it felt nostalgic which I do appreciate
I did not like the main character or like any of the characters in general. Layla was rude to girl who was sort of flirting with one of the guys she liked even though the girl was genuinely nice to her and did not hate her at all. Like Layla did not even attempt to hide her dislike towards her and it irritated me.
Overall I am glad I read this book. It was meh but fun at the same time. I don't know if I will continue on with this story but never say never. I do want to read Armentrout's other books though because I did enjoy how addicting her writing was. 2 stars for now, maybe 2.5 on a good day. I do recommend if you are looking for a throwback read of old YA.

I'm slightly disappointed. This is because I think The Problem With Forever, that's also written by Jennifer, is way better than this book.
I ended up skipping a lot of sentences or just not really reading them. This didn't make the story confusing or anything. I just wanted it to be over.
Do I want to read the next book in this series? Maybe. Why? Because maybe the second book is better than the first. (Which doesn't happen very often. Almost never)

angsty, and cheesy, and exactly what I needed....but that ending? I need the other books now

I honestly was not expecting to like this as much as I did. After searching for books similar to “Kingdom of the Wicked,” someone recommended this and I can’t say I’m disappointed. It definitely filled that need for me, and although the similarities are stark, “White Hot Kiss” stands on its own. I forgot just how much I enjoy reading urban fantasies that take place in high school settings, and this one was super bingeable and really gave me “City of Bones” vibes. Can’t wait to read the next story!
