After my 3rd attempt I finally got sucked into this book! I am a sucker for ghost hunting and old UK architecture, I really enjoyed the worldbuilding and setting! The world building isn't too complex and some of it doesn't make since... but I am assuming it has to do with the overarching plot. It was soo fun to see ghost hunting taken to a whole new level!
Overall, I liked the characters and I am excited to learn more about them. HOWEVER, the fatphobia was atrocious. Lucy's inner monologue was awful to George ):. I know this book is a bit older (not that that excuses it), so I didn't expect it to be on par with todays standards, but damn. It's unfortunate that a middle grade book bullied this character who probably resembles many kids reading it. I hope the later installments do not continue with this kind of mentality.
I believe the theme was: child exploitation = bad, which is very relevant with todays mommy blogger boom. Obviously, kids should not be exploited, but additionally, it's important to acknowledge that children deserve their own agency. Children are not adults' pawns; parents and institutions should serve as guides rather than dictators.. which is what I believe the book was getting at.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read! I am excited to have a new middle grade series to look forward to(: sidenote: I hope the show can eventually get renewed because the vibes were GREAT! It also seemed to fix a few issues I had with the book (like the fatphobia).
