A Leonard rec. It’s like John Bellairs meets the 21st Century… ❤️❤️❤️
i'm so obsessed with these characters and the world and i wanna know EVERYTHING
So I picked up a copy of this book simply because I have an ARC of the second and Rick Riordan (love his books) recommends it. I knew I would like the book, but I didn't know that I would like it as much as I did. The book literally had me laughing until I couldn't breathe. It was great. (:
There are three main characters: Lucy Carlyle, A. J. Lockwood, and George Cubbins. The name Cubbins just makes me think of the bear dressed lost boy from Disney's Peter Pan. Each of the three are pretty young, though it is not specified how old they actually are. They are all gifted with a type of sight, which is why they are ghost hunters (I couldn't think of a different way to put it). While the company the three work for belongs to Lockwood, Lucy is the narrator. Her psychic sight is not as strong as Lockwood, but she does have a very strong gift with listening and touch. This makes her the perfect narrator. Lucy is not the leader, so it leaves somethings that happen in mystery. But because she has the stronger gifts, we get to know more of what is going on with the ghosts.
Lockwood and George are both sarcastic young men, who honestly had the funniest lines. Lockwood often seems impulsive, but usually has a plan that only he knows about. He's a great leader of the little band. While George is a bit of an oddball. He often has his nose in a book, his mouth full of food, or is doing strange ghost related experiments.
In this book, the trio have two main cases. Each case is vastly different from the other, but both give that creepy feeling. What I liked is that, even while they were working on the second case, they were still trying to figure out the first case. The first case was not completely solved by the time of the second. The author does a great job leaving clues throughout the book that hints to the reader of certain things.
The end of the book did two things for me. The early part tied everything up very neatly and brought justice and good ends. The later part really gave me the chills. There's no cliffhanger, but it leaves just enough excitement to leave me wanting the next book.
I am excited to read what the next book will bring us. While I do have an advance copy of the book, I did not bring it with my on my extended vacation. It will be back within my grasp on September 16, which is coincidentally when the book will be available for purchase. Otherwise, 5/5 to this funny, spooky, ghost-riddled middle grade that is great for anyone who likes a mystery or two.

4.5 rounded up. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this book. Hence the rounding up. Also it's just a really good story. Coherent, with great, capable characters and fascinating world building. It is truly refreshing to read a well written book. No forced exposition, and no extra details shoved down your throat. No fat shaming or gender roles, nothing. Just a gripping yarn. Unfortunately short, but there are more. Somehow reminds me of a more wholesome version of the Supernaturalists.
A fantastic suggestion by @Amrita Goswami as always!!
Disclaimer: I am a huge fan of the Bartimaeus trilogy, so any passing similarities are Easter eggs, not flaws.
EDIT: Can't believe its been 3 years, still as fantastic as before. Infact, one of the only minor gripes I have is that the TV series is almost better (since George is much more likeable there).
