I shouldn't read other reviews before I write my own or even before I rate a book, as I tend to doubt myself and my abilities to critique a work.
I had to read this in school... possibly grade eight, which was about 35 years ago. To say I loved it would be putting it mildly. It moved me deeply. It was like poetry.
Still, I occasionally pull it out and reread it... it's a novella, so a very quick read.
When an author can couch words in such a way that they evoke a tremendous emotional response from me... well, what can I say. I'm sold!

I had high hopes for this book, since overall it has such good reviews and high ratings. I did like it and the writing was very descriptive, but it just didn't capture my heart the way I was hoping.

Mtmybmom made me read this book because it's her favorite of all time. Nice, relaxing, dreamlike detour from the horror/fantasy I usually read. A bit slow in parts though.

The more I think about it, the more I really like this book. It's about a priest who goes up north to serve a parish that consists of several Indian villages. He doesn't turn native, he doesn't try to turn them white, and he doesn't fall in love with an Indian maiden. He is really very Christlike in his approach: he lives among the people, respects them, helps them out, and loves them. It's beautiful.
I found this book peaceful and thought-provoking. I enjoyed seeing the relationship develop between Mark and the Kwakwala Indians. I think he succeeded in what the Bishop hoped for him, that is, to "learn enough of the meaning of life to be ready to die".
