AHHHH this started out unsettling and then you think everything’s fine there is really an explanation for everything and then you get the REAL explanation and you’re like oh god this is disturbing and upsetting and so many things are happening AND THEN you get the actual end of the book and you’re right back to the feelings from the beginning. Jennifer McMahon is such a master of writing weird and unsettling topics about things that are just slightly at the edge of reality but maybe actually could be real. Part of me wants to re-listen to it immediately just to see the entire journey with the bird’s eye view I now have. I had a good time on this rollercoaster of a disturbing ride but definitely heed the triggers on this one

It has all the grimy tick marks for a page turner - but it lacks any coherence at all.  The story is all over the place.  It mocks victims of rape/incest by being so poorly done.  These are awful and traumatic events in people’s lives.  If written about they need to be done with care, not just have it thrown in to catch attention and perverse enjoyment.  I couldn’t decide if the author didn’t know if she was writing for fantasy or crime so she waffled.  Poorly done and in poor taste.

Overall not bad. I'm conflicted in how I feel about the end. I am also sick of a certain trope:
being a woman(ish) who is childfree by choice, I am endlessly tired of childfree women changing their minds in stories. It sets a bad example and results in us being doubted and questioned and ridiculed for our choice not to bear children
. Wouldn't reread, but not mad I read it.
