I really loved this book. The only issue that I had was some confusion over what kind of book this was. I went in thinking this was middle grade and it's definitely not.

I may end up changing this review to a 5 star at some point. I really did love this and I 100% loved the portrayal of angels in this. I watched the first episode of Lucifer and I was complaining about the lack of religiously accurate angels (ie terrifying) and I was pleasantly surprised to find that here

I found this slow to get going, but once it did I was riveted. Set in an idealised near-future where there is supposedly no more monsters, Jam is visited by a creature who claims her best friend's house is harbouring a monster. Torn between wanting to believe she lives in a safe world, and wanting to protect her friend, Jam joins forces with the creature, who calls itself Pet, and uncovers something that shocks everyone. As usual, Akwaeke Emezi's prose is simply brilliant.

I struggled getting into the book, which was why I gave it 4 stars, but once I got into it, it was a 5 the rest of the way. I love that the protagonist is a little girl who is scared of what she has to do to help Pet find the monster. “Courage is not the absence of fear but rather acting despite the fear.” The characters are complex and beautifully unique. Akwaeke Emezi created such unique families that were warm and quick to invite us into their homes and lives and keeps us guessing as to whom the real monster is.

I am going to go ahead a put a spoiler warning here.
I think this was an interesting topic to discuss about monsters in general. As you get older, the things that scare you will change. Your monsters may change as well. I did bump it down to 4 stars because I thought the ending was predictable. However, it brought up good topics for conversations.
