Tavia Gilbert did an amazing job narrating Halfway to the Grave, she brought to life the personality of each of these amazing characters.
Generally speaking, I normally don't enjoy paranormal romance. After reading a couple of books that were recommended to me, I was forced to rethink my position on the genre. I think my issue was not with paranormal romance, I was simply reading the wrong books. Halfway to the Grave was a perfect mixture of romance, excitement, and an exhilarating plot.
One of the things I enjoy most is when I find a book that contains characters that I would want to know, that I would want to hang out with. I was so happy to have found this in this first novel in Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series. Although Cat, the heroine, is the strong female character that I always look for in novels that I read, it was Bones, her vampire boyfriend that stole the show for me. Biting sarcasm, dominant masculinity, and his own brand of integrity made his character stand out to me.
I thought that the Frost's writing was brilliant, setting up scene after scene of nail-biting suspense, not to mention some truly heart pounding sex scenes, that successfully brought this story to life. My highest compliment to this book is that before I turned the last page, I had already bought the rest of the series that are available and am planning to finish them all before starting on anything new.
I've read so many reviews about this book, and I'm so glad that I followed the recommendation of a couple people who have similar tastes as me to read this. I would certainly recommend this series not only to fans of paranormal romance, but also to fans of urban fantasy that haven't found paranormal romance to be to their liking.
Rating: 5 - I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

On top of all the good reviews I read everywhere, this series was warmly recommended by a friend of mine who neglected to mention one thing : this book was so funny !
That friend agrees with me on one thing : come on, apart from Bone's brown eyes... English, dyed platinum hair, cheekbones, flask of whiskey, vocabulary, "menu with legs", attitude, black leather trenchcoat, humor, even the cave ! Ring a bell ? Spike is back ! Waaaaaa ha ha hahah ! (Sorry to squee, I have a fixation on Spike).

So, quite obviously, I loved his character :)
And I loved Cat too, strong, sharp tongue, fearless, totally my type of heroin. I didn't like her family so much, but well, they have their reasons for behaving the way they did.
When Cat and Bones first meet and she tries to pick him up ? Hilarious !
"Oh, stick a sockin it already," he interrupted me with an irritated tone you'd use to scold a child. "You always ramble on so ? No wonder your dates went right for your throat. Can't say as I blame them."
The alcoholic pervy ghost ? Priceless !
"Drunken filthy pig !" I spat. "Bastard !"
"And a good eve'in' to you, too, mistress !" he called out, his edges starting to blur and fade. "Come back soon !"
"I hope worms shit on your corpse !" was my reply. A ghost had just gotten tothird base with me. Could I sink any lower ?"
The scene with Timmie and Cat and her mom ? LMAO !!!
The only restriction I have about this book is that she learns to fight like a pro in a week ? She must be a fast learner. Then, she has special abilities. And she doesn't seem devastated when something happens at a certain time. But well, it didn't keep me from loving that book.
It's not an erotic novel, there is just one scene, yet Bones can be a wonderful dirty talker when he wants to train Cat not to blush in front of potential targets !
"You look luscious, pet. The only thing that could make your mouth more beautiful is if it were wrapped around my cock. I wager you could start my heart again. I'd like to bend you over just to hear how loud you can scream. I bet you like it rough, you'd like me to tear into you until you can't beg anymore..."
"My, my, someone hasn't been laid in a while".
I can't believe I waited so long to read that series ! The final instalment was published recently so I won't be kept on a cliffhanger at some point. This book has a light cliffhanger, but you know it's because there's a series coming, it's like the pilot of a tv show. And believe me, I WANT TO READ THE REST AND I WILL !!!
As a tofu eater myself, I have to add this one more quote :
"We boarded the plane after boxing and stakes and knives and taking them to a FedEx carrier, airport security being so strict nowadays. In the section marked "contents", Bones filled out "tofu".

Whoaa this is a great book.
Aku suka Cat, tokoh cewek yang kuat dan ga menye-menye. I liked Bones too, he's hottie :p
Jalan ceritanya seru abis, gory and bloody. Yah meskipun a lot of dirty talks in this book :p
So, 4 stars :D

I don't usually go for the paranormal stuff, but this was a good read. I'm kind of hooked now. 3.5 stars.
3.5/4 stars
I quite enjoyed this although it had its corny bits. Loved Bones. It was also my first real experience with an audiobook and I enjoyed the experience.

I read book #1 and #2 of the Night Huntress World series, which is a spin off of sorts, to this series without realizing that it was not the first two books in this series. So, it is interesting to hear how Bones and Kat met and got started.
3.5 stars
Halfway to the Grave was a pretty fun read! Bones was the best character by far. I loved that he treated our heroine with respect and took the time to seek out her permission before moving forward with anything physical. How many romances are written with the topic of consent at the forefront? Sadly, not as many as there should be. It's refreshing to see it highlighted in this story. Plus those steamy scenes turned out to be more on the sweet side since Bones is such a gentleman. I'm on board for more of that.
I will say, I had to lower my rating a bit because of two characters. Cat and her freaking mother. Overall, I didn't really enjoy the choices the author made with these two.
I was surprised at how juvenile Cat was written. I mean, she's a 22 year old college student and some of her actions and thoughts felt like early high school age to me. Cat came off as incredibly naive for someone who's been killing vamps for 6 years. Like she can stab multiple people to death but doesn't know to be suspicious of a random drink from a stranger at a bar? There's a disconnect there, her character isn't really consistent. There are other similar examples of this throughout the story, so I'm hoping in the next books she grows out of her dumb ass phase.
The mom can totally go choke. I know she's written to be a roadblock of sorts, but it kinda ties into Cat being immature. The way they act together makes our heroine read incredibly young, like she's helpless. This doesn't make sense and screws with the idea that our MC is supposed to be this intelligent, deceitful vamp serial killer.
In spite of that, the rest of the plot was interesting. I liked the bounty hunter concept, and the whole deal at the end was something I didn't completely see coming. That cliffhanger though??? I'll be continuing with the series for sure. Fingers crossed that we get heavy character development from Cat. I suppose even if she stagnates, I enjoyed Bones enough to explore future books with him. He kinda carried the whole story for me.

I enjoyed reading this book. I am looking forward to the rest of the series. I like Cat and can't wait to see how this thing with her and Bones plays out. And the addition of the team will make for some interesting situations.
