So I just indulged in an epic Night Huntress series reread this week. I have to say...this is my favorite series.
I loved this book the first time I read it, but I love it even more with each subsequent reread. The funny parts are still hilarious the 10th time you read them. I enjoy my action with a little laughter (a la Whedon) and Jeaniene hits the target on this. Not to mention, could there BE a more appetizing romantic interest than Bones? I've yet to find one!
There's something to be said for an old Europen vampire that doesn't act all...regal. Gotta love it!

This is a re-read for me. I am gearing up for the final book in the NIGHT HUNTRESS series. I don’t remember how I happened upon HALFWAY TO THE GRAVE for the first time, but I know it was an ebook deal. At that point, I wasn’t new to Urban Fantasy. I’d tore through the Women of the Otherworld and Mercy Thompson’s worlds. Though both of those worlds have vampires, I was pretty hooked on the werewolves. Well Bones gave my alpha shifting hotties a run for my heart.
Cat and Bones are still one of my favorite couples of all times. I love Cat’s feisty sarcasm. She knows she is often not as equipped as her enemy, but she won’t quit and is so convicted. It takes a Bones to compliment her, someone who has been around and is a personality in his own right. I just love how their relationship grows out of nothing. Their banter and tit for tat eventually melds into an in-sync thing of its own. And if you really are new to the series, the ending will rip your heart out. So make sure you have ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE on stand by.
TAVIA GILBERT is Cat. At first I wasn’t quite sure, because she doesn’t sound like the girl on the covers. The chick on the covers looks a little older and more experienced. But Cat is going to college and is barely old enough to drink. TAVIA is able to capture the naiveté of a twenty-something, but with a clarity that matches Cat’s resolve. She nails the jaded-ness of a girl raised to loath her vampire half. But it is balanced with a wit and sarcasm that makes her fun. Bones doesn’t have the typical British accent you hear in audiobooks, but one that imagine belongs to someone of his background and history. And just as he grows on you with every interaction and every word spoken, so does his accent. TAVIA also does justice to her mother, grandparents and neighbor. She also pulls off the villainous vampires and the stalwart badge-types.

Well.
I was hoping this book would restore some of the hope I had towards urban fantasy and vampires in general. It didn't.
I thought that at some point the plot would pick up, and that Hennessey, instead of hiding behind a multitude of lackeys, would pose an actual threat. He didn't.
Maybe the reason why I didn't enjoy this as much as I should was because of the occasionally cringe-worthy innuendos, or the fact that Bones seems to have something against spelling "love" properly, as opposed to "luv"; I really do want to kick him where it hurts every time he says that. The writing itself was quite weak. If it had been better, the cookie-cutter plot might have been more easily accepted - but in the end, this just didn't cut it. How it managed to get such a high rating on Goodreads is beyond me.

I began reading this with a group, and one of the few in the group that had not *already* read this. Once I started, though, I got pretty sucked in (HA!). Cat is a badass, and Bones...well...so many inappropriate comments could be made based on his name alone ;)
So...while I started reading it for the group, I will be continuing with the series on my own because I enjoyed it just that much.

I almost want to dismiss this one as a Beginner's Guide to Rough Sex with an Older Gentleman.
"Is that a stake, Bones, or are you just happy with my new dress?"
He gave me a grin that was filled with more innuendo than an hour's worth of conversation.
"In this case, it's a stake. You could always feel around for something more, though. See what comes up."
I thought this book would be a nice fun read full of fluffy silliness. I definately was not expecting to love it as much as I did.
Halfway to the Grave is full of fantastic snarky banter, plenty of action scenes, plenty of plot points and, of course, Bones.
There were a lot of aspects about this book that took my by suprise in a really good way. I was not expecting so much detail in Bones' backstory. That he began life in England, became a pickpocket and prostitute, and then was a convict sent to Australia. It was a lot of detail about a subject not usually studied in America and I found it really interesting.
I also really enjoyed the slow change of perspective of Cat towards vampires. Obviously she'd have to change her opinion of Bones because otherwise I would have lost all respect for her for sleeping with someone she disliked so much in the beginning. The conversations about how humans treat other humans vs how vampires treat humans was very well done, especially the conversation between Francesca and Cat on pg 241-242. The worst of our kindtreats his people better than your countries treat their citizens. Obviously in this paricular context vampires drinking the blood of humans, most of which are unaware it even happened, is only slightly better than drinking them dry, but it was a really good argument against prejudice etc.
I also really liked when Bones challenged Cat's perception of the vampires she killed on pg 78. Cat had always thought that she was doing the world a favour by killing vamps, until Bones points out that she is intentionally luring them to a secluded place, encouring them to want to bite/have sex with her, and the ultimate belief that they would have killed her if she hadn't beaten them to the punch. Cat is forced to reconsider and accept that possibly after a few slurps of tasty blood they would have left her alone.
Despite her constant vocalisation of her hatred of vampires Bones is very patient with her. He is a very endearing character, patient with Cat during her intial denial of their relationship and very understanding of the position her mother puts her in. He's also full of fantastic lines. Though the "diamonds and cream skin" description of him is rather cringe worthy as is the concept of vampire eyes glowing bright green when they're angry or feeling intimate with someone.
Apart from the plot there are some fantastic lines in this book that had me laughing out out loud.
A poltergeist sits in Cat's throat while she drinks alcohol so he can taste it through her. He then also jumps inside her a bit lower down. I had a drunken pervert in my pants! Do you know how unsanitary that is? Winston poltergeisted my panties, that's what!
Cat's mum Justina to Cat: I'm going to into the next couple of towns where no one knows us, and I am going to buy you condoms!
On Cat's glowing eyes: Fighting was a sure way to bring out their glow. In that way, it was like an optical erection. Unavoidable once things got to a certain point.
You had to admire that kind of dtermination. Whether or not it came with underwear.
You're not a woman. You're the Grim Reaper with red hair!
My brain had a BACK IN 5 MINUTES sign hung on it, apparantly.
Now, will you stop griping every time you have to lick a few bits off my pieces?
There is also the single most disturbing line of the book that is also hilarious:
Bitch! I'm going to rip out your throat and fuck your bleeding neck!
He gave me a grin that was filled with more innuendo than an hour's worth of conversation.

This was mostly a lighthearted romp but I just couldn’t deal with the obnoxious heroine, regardless of how much the author tried to mitigate her ignorant self-righteousness with lectures from the paranormal cast of characters.
Although I liked it, I don't see all the hype that's surrounding this series. Maybe it really shines in the sequels, but I haven't found the super coolness yet. But, I must admit, I did love Bones. He really is swoony and he was so sweet to her. So many quotes that I wanted to tab, but I read it on audio. I have already checked out the second part from my library, and I plan to start it ASAP. I will let you know how I feel after I get more into the series.
As far as the action, I was impressed with that. Kat is kick ass, but she gets lessons from Bones to help perfect her approach. I was also impressed by the different types of paranormal entities in this book. I really thought it was going to be about just vampires which i have to admit, I wasn't that excited about. But having the different entities helped me enjoy it even more.

I can't even finish this. I dislike this book so much.
