Although this is book 8 of the Vera Stanhope series, it is the first book I read. I did feel like I didn't have all the background of the characters since I hadn't started at the beginning, but I felt that I could still follow it.
Vera visits the prison to deliver a talk and an inmate John Brace, a former cop, asks her for a favor. If Vera will look after his daughter and grandchildren, he will tell her the location of the body of Robbie Marshall, a former friend of her dad, and one who was mixed up in crime. When they dig up the body, they find a surprise. As Vera delves into the back story of Robbie and The Seagull hotel, there is more than expected.
I enjoyed this novel and will definitely read more.

Another excellent tale of Vera and her team of detectives. Thoroughly enjoyable.

1st Vera I have read, and 1st Ann Cleese’s. Vera is an enjoyable character, lots of flaws but very clever and real.

I enjoyed the characters, especially Vera, but the mystery was a little weak.

This was my first Vera Stanhope novel (although I have seen several seasons of the TV series). I loved it and it won't be the last. I listened to the audiobook and it was well done and easy to follow. This book has a rich and complex plot but was clear and not confusing. There are several very good red herrings and a lot of Vera's early personal history is packed into its pages, so I think it was a good starting point as a book in the series if I wasn't going to start with the first one (I was reading this for book club, so I didn't chose). Very satisfying.
