Read a number of these graphic novels dealing with the Green Lantern all at once. It turns out, I am extremely ambivalent towards the Green Lantern. The stories about the Green Lantern just feel like a bits and pieces of other super hero stories combined with some attempt to make emotion the center of everything. Didn't hate it, just didn't love.

Artwork pretty good, just the stories not very memorable or interesting.

Has the best character development of any graphic novel that I've read so far. I enjoyed it, and look forward to the next volume.

No offense to whoever drew issue 6 but that was some of the worst art I've ever seen published in a big two comic book. Looking like a bad Newgrounds cartoon from 2009

As a collector of (solely) Superman comics when I was younger, Green Lantern was a hero I was always interested in. During the Reign of Superman story--following his death--I read when Coast City was wiped out and ended up getting the three Emerald Night comics when Hal Jordan became Parallax. Fast forward to now, I've gone back and digitally read every Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corp, and Emerald Warrior comic since that event. I was not disappointed in that time and expense investment.

I led with all that to say that GL in the New 52 did not start over like most other titles. They are marching on, so to come in with Volume 1 may be confusing. (To feel adequately in touch with what is happening, I'm not saying one should read everything I did; I'm just a completist, but certainly Blackest Night is essential.) But in a way, Volume 1: Sinestro is brilliantly written like a reboot, because events have transpired to put Sinestro back in the GLC. The way he is able to control Hal Jordan while requiring his assistance harkens to his days as mentor.

One of the best things I like about the GL family of comics is their frequent and wonderful use of full page panels. So much going on and it is consistently good! These guys let the art speak for itself, and I so appreciate that (especially after reading volume 1's of Action Comics and Superman).

It's awfully expensive to collect several comic titles, but as well written as GL is, I'm sticking with the family of GL, GLC, and GL:NG. (Yah, not so much Red Lanterns.)

Of all the New 52 titles so far Green Lantern is one that remains relatively unchanged and simultaneously majorly overhauled. After spending considerable time returning Hal Jordan to his rightful place during Rebirth, DC tossed him right back out the door again with the New 52 reboot. Sinestro, with all his crimes, is back in as GL (through Gardner, Raynor, and Stewart still bear rings as well) while Hal has been thrown back to Earth sans ring. It is quite the change and the Hal of New 52 is kind of an ass despite his experience (not quite the man-child glimpsed in the New 52 JLA reboot) and a far cry from the somewhat more mature Hal of the original continuity. All these changes might be somewhat more tolerable except that they also seemed to have kept much of the original GL continuity in tact. There are still multiple corps of different colors, Kyle still bore all of the GL power at one point, and Sinestro was still the leader of the Yellow ringbearers. As a result GL sort of feels like a half a reboot and the changes that have been made just sort of feel like they were made for changes’ sake. To make matters somewhat more frustrating we’re still hammering on the “Guardians are emotionless bastards” angle that has seemingly been a staple for the longest time ever. I’m definitely glad I waited for the trade and I don’t think GL will be making it back into the monthly rotation. Despite solid writing from GL veteran Geoff Johns and fantastic art by GL veteran Doug Mahnke I found Volume 1 of Green Lantern to be a major disappointment.

My habit of picking DC titles at random just because they're available and look vaguely intriguing continues. Again, I don't know DC well other than through cultural osmosis.

It's obvious in this volume that there is a TON of Green Lantern backstory I have no idea of, but I think the overall story did alright in trying to settle Sinestro and Hal Jordan in a place that sort of makes sense. Their antagonistic relationship made sense, Hal's loser era makes sense, Sinestro makes sense.

The only thing that really kept this from being enjoyable for me was the actual writing - I kept being smacked in the face over and over and over with "Hal and Sinestro hate each other and Sinestro thinks he's doing the Right Thing and Hal thinks he's the worst guy ever and Hal is a loser and and and--"

It's so overwrought and gives the audience NO chances whatsoever to come to any emotional conclusions on their own. The very definition of telling and not showing. Every character explains their every feeling and motivation on page for us to see. It sucks, because the set up for the story itself is intriguing.

The art is...something, I guess. If you ignore everyone's constipated faces and the fact that this artist will only draw complicated line art for the males and aliens but completely smooth, featureless faces for any female-presenting character...it's fine. I guess.

I wish this had been better.

Sinestro is a Green Lantern and Hal Jordan is not - that's a turn of events.
But Sinestro needs Hal Jordan's help to save his home world after the Sinestro Corps have rebelled against Sinestro.

Pretty good overall.

Good art, good pacing, good storytelling.
I've never been a fan of Green Lantern so I don't know a lot of the backstory and I'm sure that would have made this even better but I saw this this at the library and the art caught my eye.

I don't know if I'd recommend it but it was good enough that I could see myself reading more of Green Lantern.
