This book was blunt. Girls lives are a lot more difficult than they appear to be. Nina was taught at a young age that love was conditional. This novel explores the trials and tribulations she faces as a woman. What Girls Are Made Of is a book with true and meaning and power. I really enjoyed this brave novel and hope it helps others to find themselves.

Read for Mock Printz/Librarian Book Group
I hurried through this because the book did a great job of creating a teenage girl who desires only to be the girlfriend of Seth.  I suspect there are still a lot of girls out there who fit this description, alas.  The book is graphic in all it's descriptions, painting a bleak portrait of the particular adolescent's life.  It reminded me of the movie Palo Alto in that regard.

(Random note: book 2 of 2 this month where the romantic lead was named Seth)

Trigger warnings in this one.

There's abortion, sex, bullying, divorce. It was interesting to read though, to see her struggle and to follow her journey through her experiences. It also takes place in Irvine, so I was able to recognize a few streets!

4.5 stars - a short read and I already want to go back through to re-read some passages.

Well, damn.

I thought I loved Infandous, but this, THIS, is a killer story about being a girl. It's raw and gross and unsettling and perfect.

Liked the premise and overarching messages. Didn’t like the delivery, characters, or writing style. 2 stars.

Where were books like this when I was growing up? I’m so glad they exist now. Excellent. Will read everything by this author.

Thoughtful. It really got the sense of being female, growing up and feeling lost, dealing with changes alone, and just seeking self worth through the attention of others. Also surprisingly gruesome.

To me, this book deserves 3.75 stars but for the sake of the Goodreads rating scale, I rounded it up to 4. I found this book to have a very interesting topic but I’m not entirely overjoyed about having read it. I think that it deals with important things and it was definitely an eye opener but not overly amazing. This is definitely not a book for everyone as it does deal with potentially inappropriate/controversial topics (abortion, sex, and some strong language) especially for a younger reader. Overall I’m glad I read it because it has a strong message but it’s not my favorite.
