when i first read the book i liked it a lot because i thought it was just supposed to be a psychological horror/thriller, but upon discovering that this is supposed to be a dark romance, i like it significantly less. protagonist is far from the main character, everyone is awful, and there are so many missed opportunities for genuine character development. the romance is the most insufferable part of the book, but it was tolerable when i thought it was meant to be a horror element. so if you just pretend to not know you’re reading a colleen hoover book, this is a solid 3.5 for simplicity and tropes

I enjoyed the twists but there was far too many sex scenes for a thriller and I didn’t connect to the characters at all. It just felt a little flat is all. However, it was extremely easy to get through and I found that every time I picked it up I struggled to put it down!

The best Colleen Hoover novel I’ve ever read. The twist at the end was actually good (though yes, there was a lengthy explanation). Parts of this book were horrifying. I was constantly trying to guess how it would end and I could not stop reading (finished this in four days). This reminded me of “Flowers in the Attic” by VC Andrews for some reason.

The only negative: the main character is annoying and downright unlikeable by the end (but it works with the ending imo).

This is one of the hardest books I’ve ever read. There were points where I HAD to put it down and walk away bc it was so dark.
I’ve never read a book that made me feel so disgusted and sick to my stomach and made me cry like this. There absolutely should be a trigger warning before the book even starts.
There’s no romance to me in this book. It’s smut, which I’m okay with, while others aren’t.
If you have triggers of child death and abuse, this book is NOT for you.

Verity lives up to they hype of the mystery and tension. Even writing this I’m still a little freaked out by the concept. The almost open-ended-ness of the ending is definitely going to sit with me for a long time. However, the obsession over a man that’s only traits I can remember are being handsome and loving his children was taken a little overboard. There were many times I was rolling my eyes and even the smut felt a little much. The mystery and creepiness in the book were great- the relationships not as much. I did find the story within the story interesting.
