Wow. I lost my copy and was just going to let it be given that I was kinda skeptical after the ending of orient express which I found a little unsatisfying. This, however, was a fantastic mystery novel. Glad I finished it.

When Hercule Poirot retires to the country, he is incognito as to his identity, so it is a surprise when he is called upon to investigate the death of a local landowner.
This is Poirot’s fourth outing, but unlike the previous books it is narrated by the local doctor. It is not necessary to have read the previous stories, but a passing familiarity with the characters would be a good thing to have before reading.
I am proud to say “I was right!” was my response at the end, but it is not that this book is in any way predictable or contrived, but beautifully executed with a nice twist at the end.The story takes us through the investigation from the last sighting of the victim, through to Poirot’s inevitable conclusion and denouement as he identifies the killer.
As a piece of detective fiction, this is definitely on the list of masterful works, even though it is very quick to read. I think any fan of the show would enjoy the book, and might be forgiven for imagining David Suchet in the role of Poirot, because his depiction fits the description so well.
This is an entertaining, cosy-esque mystery, with a unique perspective and a satisfying, if somewhat tricky ending. It’s a must-read for detective novel fans, as well as Agatha Christie fans, and if you want to see a novel that started a trope, then this is definitely something you should read.
