An absolutely fantastic mystery. I can easily see why this is many readers’ favourite Christie novel.
I always like to try and have a go at solving detective fiction by locking in my theories when we get the clear “I’ve got it!” moment from the detective: this time, I successfully guessed the culprit! Despite this, there was several aspects I couldn’t explain until I had them revealed to me. The ending was the perfect mixture of satisfaction and gratification.
SPOILERS: I especially loved how Christiesubverts one of the most important rules of detective fiction - the reliable narrator - by very carefully and subtly withholding information from us without actually lying. In fact, the narrator provides us with all the clues we need to solve the mystery!

You know what? I came here perfectly prepared to give this a 4.5 for not being PERFECT, but being really really well done in addition to being iconic. But actually it just is kind of sublimely perfect in a way one doesn't ever expect a detective novel, even a Christie one, to be. She is just a master of absolutely clear yet intricate storytelling; having read so many other authors recently makes her best efforts, like this one, stand out all the more.

The final chapters, the moments where Poirot was slowly piecing together the truth of the murder… I have never been so tense whilst reading a book. Amazing.
