This book uses the main character being a "journalist" as an excuse to basically tell us the story, rather than show us. She asks every single character she meets the same questions, and the whole "oops they stole my article I swear I never gave them permission" felt like an excuse to drop Ben's character because the author didn't know what else to do with him.
The premise was so cool, but the book fell flat for me.

One of the best thrillers I have read recently. Lots of twists and turns, some I guessed, but certainly not all.
Wow what a wild story! This is dark and twisty and unexpected. I think this story is quite original and reminds me of the dark fairytales. A book of nightmares really. I actually really enjoyed this story and was expecting it to go the way it did. One thing i slightly guessed. But i liked the cultish and dark atmosphere. The audio was pretty great as well (did have an issue with the sound. Seemed a bit robotic like not a great copy) but the narrator did a fantastic job and it sounded so sinister.
I don’t know about ya’ll but I’m getting really tired of so many cult related stories. It’s becoming so overly done, specifically this year. I really did like the fairy tale stories being told by a serial killer, that was unique and creepy. Other than that, I don’t think this was memorable or anything either. Really interesting synopsis but lackluster execution. I do think the narrator did a great job with the different voices and characters, for the women. When she was doing a male character, I couldn’t take it seriously.

What started off as a really enthralling read, took a nose dive into an almost DNF. Here’s why:
1. The over explored settings felt like the author was trying to reach a specific word count.
2. There are still glaring questions at the end, like what happened with detective Ben Parker and Heather? Did Heather get revenge on her old manager at the paper? What happened to Lilian and her sister? WHY WASN’T THE COMMUNE DISCUSSED IN ANY DETAIL?!
3. There were a RIDICULOUS amount of named characters.
4. Heather is a terrible journalist, and has not a journalist bone in her body! She was always asking Michael and Ben Parker so many awful questions, instead of asking questions that mattered.
5. The romance added in was totally unnecessary and could’ve done without. Especially since there wasn’t much of a follow up between Ben and Heather, post catching the Red Wolf copycat.
All that being said, the plot twist was rushed, lots of questions were left unanswered and the last of the booked was far too long. It left me with bitter disappointment and I would not recommend this book.
