As with most Blake Crouch books, the journey is the most important part. The voice actor for this was great, and the narrative voice matched it so well. It also changed and that was super interesting. I felt with Logan a lot of the time. I think Blake showed us that he knows how to write beautiful prose with beautiful sentiment. It was still unsettling like most of his works can be, but the grimbright atmosphere was an awesome background against very intense science. I was left longing at the end of the book. But i will say the conclusion is compelling in a way I'll probably think about for a while. In writing this review I've changed my review from 4.5 to 5. I'll reduce it if I stop thinking about it.

Good premise, good opening as we and Logan learn what's happening to him.

An interesting discussion begins re whether we can upgrade our way around a society that seems hardwired for "end of the world, oh, bummer, pass the ketchup willya?"

There are hints of trouble as we get a Neal Stephenson infodump (here's ALL my research!) but there's also a plausible conflict.

Alas, the best-seller and screenwriter aspects then take over. Here comes The Government Is Coming For You, and Logan is on the Run.

And Logan's speed-reading of two books at once has taught him use of all weapons and tools, martial arts, etc. - all with the required muscle memory and timing. He caresses his Burleigh & Stronginthearm 11mm with custom frammis bliner, and all the other Batman stuff he's suddenly an expert on. Soon he's free-climbing a skyscraper (never done it but how hard can it be, eh?) and away we go.

I admit that many of the action hero tropes were absent. I liked the Rogers/Nadine part at the end, and Logan's calculations re the stairwells.

But despite an interesting sociopolitical angle, I walk away remembering this book as "brest-seller action" more than science fiction. Good for many, not for me. See also the review by "Rob"
