A dark fairy tale retelling always goes down well for me, though this felt a little quick. The world building was vast and intricate yet only hinted at, and I would have loved it explored more. Overall I felt it lacked an elusive 'something' but anything less than 4 stars seems inadequate. The writing flowed poetically, and I enjoyed the glimpses of characters along with the main POV Toadling. Also it needs to be noted, T Kingfisher is knocking the beautiful book covers out of the park again.
