„A plantation was a plantation; one might think one’s misfortunes distinct, but the true horror lay in their universality.“
A capitivating read, especially interesting if you’re familiar with other (neo) slave narratives. Focusing purely on the reading experience I found the book a bit predictable and the style alienating from the character’s emotions and suffering - but I think it fits the narrative. The story is not indulgent in recounting the emotional and physical horrors of slavery (though they’re there, no doubt about it) but focuses more on perseverance and persistence.

I truly wish that the railroad aspect wasn't written so literally - unfortunately, I question if it does a disservice to the subject. I know too many people of different backgrounds who are now admitting that they think that "it wasn't as bad as -they- say it was".
I also wish the ending was a bit more concrete, but perhaps that is fine because the ramifications of slavery in the USA are still present and the disparity between black and white Americans is far too great, still - the story isn't concretely done yet in real life.

This book in some ways is a greatest hits of 19th century racism so it includes eugenics, forced sterilization, genocide, weekly lynchings, it doesn't revel in any of these things but know going in that reading this book will involve acknowledging these happened and some reckoning with who perpetrated these atrocities against whom. Oh also, warning for repeated use of racial slurs, including the n-word, by characters.carisamarie's review against another edition

Although written in an approachable, relatable and interesting way, I found this book difficult to get through due to the content of the story - in this way, Whitehead's story had the exact impact on me that I think he was aiming for.
