All the elements that make a good story are in Scat by Carl Hiassen. The author includes nice kids who don't always follow authority, a few not so nine kids who turn out to be better than they seem, endangered species, very bad greedy adults and a few fools. When Nick and his classmates go on a biology field trip they have to leave early because of a wildfire but not before Nick thinks he sees an endangered Florida Panther. Others have seen it too, some want to save it while others want it to go away before their illegal oil project is discovered. Scat refers both to what one says to a cat to chase it away and the droppings of animals. Nick and his classmates and their Biology teacher Mrs. Starch are all determined to save one of the 100 or so remaining Florida Panthers. Will they succeed? No spoilers here.

Hiaasen's first foray into YA, Hoot, was an excellent book and a huge hit. Scat continues his tradition of writing about the eco-system in Florida. The usual elements are there: young and resourceful protagonists who are passionate about the environment; odd adults, a few of them sympathetic; greedy big corp guys; and endangered species.

Similar to Hiaasen's other books...set in Florida with a strong enviornmental/endangered animals theme. Good mystery!

I thought this book was ok. I mostly don't like books told in the third person but it was ok in the end. I just think the plot didn't really get good and exciting until they brought in Twilly, he's what actually made the story more interesting for me. Maybe because I simply found Twilly as a much more likable and interesting person than Nick or Marta. I think that at the beginning a lot of things are repeated and it just bored me, but in the end I really enjoyed it.

A Hiassen book is always a treat. But he's truly at his best when writing for adults. It's clear he's holding back the sleazy characters and his true contempt for the overdevelopment of his home state.

Kids who are interested in nature, adventure, and good coming out on top will like this one.

Note: very weird to be reading this book while on a bus heading towards Disneyworld.

Loved it! There were lots of good side stories along with the main eco-tale of saving a swamp from oil drilling. I still think Hoot may be my favorite, because I loved the little owls. Wetlands aren't as fun to love (bugs and snakes?), but Hiaasen tried his best with a stranded panther cub. Will Momma Panther return, or be sacred away by those mean oil men?

Great Audio.

Good ecologist and conservationist book for young readers about dying species.

I’ve read this book before and liked it but not this time. After the wonderful writing in good omens, this is like a dry boring slap in the face. “They went there. They did this. He felt that.” I just couldn’t really get hooked bc it felt so blaaaand
Anyway probably fun if you’re younger and not a snob like me
