I was so pleasantly surprised by the first volume of One Piece. I wasn't sure what to expect but as someone who loves pirate stories, I went in with an open mind. Eiichiro Oda does a fantastic job of making you instantly care about the characters through the simple work of giving them an important task or goal that they believe in. I'm excited to see where this story goes next and to get introduced to more of the characters. I can see this quickly becoming a favorite series.

It was so interesting and so disturbing all at the same time. The chaos of the plot combined with the chaos of the anime art style made this manga mesmerizing to read. Luffy’s powers are creepy, and while they’re very useful, they’re rather disgusting to look at, but I guess that still made it a good spectacle if nothing else.
I loved Zolo, his ultimate escape, and their toppling of Captain Morgan and his horse’s ass of a son. It was so satisfying.
I really didn’t care for Luffy or Koby though, beyond their noble character motivations. I wasn’t enchanted enough to keep going with this series or to pick up the anime, but it was a wonderful standalone piece even if so. It was more graphic than I expected it to be, also, but I think I’m just not used to that yet because this was only my second manga. Basically, I would read it again, but it was off-putting enough that I wouldn’t make an effort to go on with the series, despite its incredible spectacle.
