  • It's finally time to start One Piece!! I checked out the Netflix show because it sounded good and the next thing I know I'm obsessed with the world and characters 😂 The number of manga volumes (and anime episodes) is intimidating, but I had to check out the source material! I'm slowly making my way through all the content and I'm excited to dive deeper into this world 🩷
  • The story starts off by introducing us to Luffy, a goofy teen whose body is made out of rubber and therefore impervious to blunt attacks! He got this ability by eating a devil fruit ... but now he's incapable of swimming. I loved the flashbacks to when he was a young boy and idolized Shanks, a kind pirate who inspired Luffy to become a different kind of pirate!
  • Luffy is determined to become the king of the pirates and seeks out to gather a crew. First up is the swordsman Zoro, who's imprisoned at a marine base for defying them! Luffy isn't willing to let him rot there, as he's in need of a good fighter for his crew 👀

â€œOne day I will find a crew that is as strong as yours!! And then I’ll find the world’s biggest treasure. And become King Of The Pirates. “

This is the beginning of a massive saga - the first volume of 90 currently published. I've been meaning to get involved for a while, but it is always so daunting to see what is ahead.

I really enjoyed the introduction to our main character Luffy D. Monkey. It was lighthearted and full of misunderstandings. In typical Luffy fashion, he eats something he should not have and accidentally gets superpowers.

It was great to see his power levels when just starting out because we know that he gets much stronger quite quickly. At this moment, he is just a kid with big dreams.

We get introduced to pirates early on - through Red-Haired Shanks - the inspiration for Luffy to become a pirate. And we also experience a touch of the emotional turmoil that Oda can deliver through his story.

For the rest of the volume, we follow Luffy as he goes off to become a pirate and all the misadventures that follow. However, now he has his first nakama - friend to join his crew.

Fun and adventurous, this budding crew of pirates keeps readers engaged with silly antics and heartwarming friendships.
This first volume includes the first encounters between Luffy, Zoro (it is confirmed by the author as Zoro, but written as Zolo in the American translation), and Nami.
