Really interesting world and strong potential in the story, but the plot itself was too disjointed and the characters felt underdeveloped.

As much as I wanted to finish this book I couldn’t. Loved the concept.. but my dyslexia got the better of me

It wasn't terrible, and some parts were very well done, but I feel that it missed the mark.

If you're looking for Nigerian (or Nigerian-American or Nigerian-British) fantasy, try Okorafor (Who Fears Death; Binti Trilogy), Adeyemi (Children of Blood and Bone), or Oyeyemi (from what I hear) instead of Onyebuchi.

Worldbuilding: excellent. Narrative: terrible. I emphatically did not like this book. I *think* the main character is supposed to be likeable, but he is naïve and simple. I often dislike second-of-a-trilogy books, because they are set up in book 1, and book 3 is going to be the series climax, so not much happens. This is the first book of a series, and it's apparently ALL setup for the rest of the series. There's limited superficial character growth and absolutely NO resolution at the end.

The narrator was pretty good for the audiobook - although as with every male narrator doing female voices, he makes them sound vapid.

***SPOILERS BELOW***

Here is an example of a never-explained plot point. The king yells, "ARREST THEM!" and a high speed foot chase follows wherein our hero jumps from a three story building and breaks several bones. Then he wakes up in the softest bed ever with a wardrobe full of fancy clothes and servants to attend to his every need. His friend was captured and WAS thrown in jail. Unaddressed.

Main character, you are totally unique because of how your spots don't disappear, except for this one girl who also is like you but oops now she's dead bye.

The beasts each mean particular sin-types, but when a beast matching the main character's mother's sin appears, no one asks "oh what's that sin, that's the one my mom did".

Here is an example of the new information provided to the main character (and reader) at 85% of the way through the book. 1) There is a rebellion. 2) We are the rebellion. 3) We are doing the rebellion tomorrow. 4) You are an integral part of tomorrow's rebellion, due to your unique ability that you have only done once and probably can't control and definitely have never practiced.

Omg I loved everything about this audiobook!

Beasts Made of Night has been on my radar for a really long time. Ever since I saw the cover and other people reading it - I wanted it. Unfortunately, it took me forever to do so but I guess it worked out in the end because I loved it!

Taj is probably the coolest main character I’ve met today. He is a sin-eater which sounds kind of interesting. He’s the best at what he does so it was pretty hard to believe that the royals wanted his best friend to help instead of him. In a world where your sins make you into a beast and he has to eat you.. yeah I’m down. Sign me up because Taj has me intrigued.

Of course things don’t always go as planned though. Which of course got me even more invested into everything. After meeting Taj, I loved him. As for the other characters, eh the jury is still out for that. I just think some things that happened in this book could’ve gone a little differently. Maybe? No idea but maybe the next book will give me another person to love.

Overall, loved this and definitely need the next book in this series!!

The concept of the story is very unique, which intrigued me. I loved the world-building and would have liked to see even more of it. The quick descriptions of Taj running past the streets of the city gave me a good idea of what the city was like.

Some characters felt a bit useless to the story to me, like Haris and Marya. They had small segments, and that was it. The only other thing that bothered me was
the relationship between the princess and Taj. I never read her age anywhere, but because of Arzu, who says she grew up with the princess around, she has to be at least somewhat older than her. So, to me, the princess felt way older than Taj, which was weird. Taj also falls in love with her after talking for like two seconds. I really thought (and maybe hoped) that Taj and Ariya would fall in love. They are so cute.

That being said, the ending was so quick I thought I was missing parts of the story. The tension was rising, betrayals were shown, dark secrets revealed, and then it was done. One of the biggest cliffhangers I have ever read. So I can’t wait to read the second book!

Couldn't get past the narrator's accent to understand enough of what was going on without straining and guessing :(
