This book is very inspiring for any creative. Filled with funny and relatable stories. This is my 2nd time reading this book and I most certainly will read it again. It gets me motivated to create!

This was quite disappointing. I expected an original view on creativity and inspiration, dressed down by either philosophy or science.
What I got was a not so coherent gathering of beliefs the author holds. Not about creativity in general, but very focused on writing. And not from the question if 'inspiration is "big magic"' but with the conclusion that it is magic. The author has some peculiar thoughts about creatitivity (which she talks about as if it was a person, a person that will only find you if it likes you) or that destiny is hardly shapeable. This book describes a lot of the experiences of the author herself and the beliefs she holds. Kept reading until the end because I hoped that some logic would form, but there deliberaltely was none. I couldn't phrase one thing I have as a take away from this book. Except maybe that you can fill a book by repeating yourself over and over again in different words, talk a lot about yourself and state nothing of worth while sounding interesting. Don't be fooled by the cover or the promise to find creativity through this book.
Advice: skip it.

I really enjoyed this book especially since I recently got into writing again and it was encouraging. Gilbert's writing style in this book kept me interested...was this book life changing? Not really. Most of the advice that is given is things I think any creative person knows. This book is more like reassurance for people who doubt themselves, but I enjoyed it.

I bought this book quite awhile ago because I love Elizabeth Gilbert but I couldn't get into it at the time. I put it aside until a friend mentioned it and I decided to give it another go. This time it was magical. This time it resonated with me. This time I "got" it.
The theme of the book is that we all are creative and that we hold ourselves back for so many reasons including fear , shame, and the pressure to have to create something that is marketable. It was extremely freeing and liberating to read of why none of that matters and creating for the sake of creating is the point of it. It was filled with anecdotes that were inspiring including her own artistic experiences. Of course, I didn't agree with everything (and that's ok, her and I have had vastly different life experiences and backgrounds) but the take away from it was motivating and inspirational and really encouraged me in my own creative pursuits.
