[i lost count of how many times i actually re-read this trilogy, it's around either the 6th or 7th time.]

the gradual development of neil's tentative relationships with the foxes, his place on the court and on the team, him slowly making meaningful bonds and letting himself taking small steps towards letting people in is one of my favorite parts of this book. all that being said, i definitely think that this book is just as much andrew's installment as we slowly unpeel layers of his character that makes us finally get a glimpse of understanding about him.

andrew's uncovering and his ever-shifting relationship with neil is mainly about the ability to trust and loyalty - two things andrew has seemingly never experienced aimed at his person before. which makes neil's actions that more interesting when we realize - his deal with andrew about andrew protecting his back might be more of a reciprocated exchange rather than the one-sided agreement both of them might have thought they made a book ago. the progress is slow, but very rewarding.

the raven king continues the tradition of being highly character driven with new truths surfacing about people as we keep reading. there's also a more prominent chunk dedicated to exy games as the championship goes on and it's incredibly engaging, to the point i wish i could actually watch these games on tv. the foxes keep tightening their ranks as a team both on and off the court and it shows on their plays. once you're in, you're invested in both the friendships and the championship, which is always such a win-win for me.

this is book two in the trilogy and also the perfect example of a good story put on slow-simmer, starting to heat up real good. thus - 4,5 stars.

ps.: this book also has one of my favorite scenes where neil
pushes andrew's hand under his shirt without an ounce of awareness how that would look like to the four adults standing in the same room with them.
gotta love this kid!

Finding out that this was originally supposed to be a manga explained everything and now I’m revising all my reviews to give it 5 stars because it is so fun. Truly the Riverdale of books. Bending the rules of reality because the author has never lived in reality.

Important: Do NOT take this as me recommending the series. Unless you’re my friend and you’re funny.
