Whoa. I cannot recommend this book to anyone, but I also can't recommend it enough. In good conscious I will not tell anyone to read this book because it is horrific. I don't read a lot of horror, but I can't imagine a book being more graphically disturbing than this one. At the same time I gave it 5/5 stars? I'm not sure why either. The word that Bazterrica created felt so real. She had an answer for everything, and I am amazed by how deep she took this fictional situation. Should we be worried about her?

The only thing I did not like is that she used "he" every time she referred to the main character. The only time she used his name is when a character was addressing him. This mad it super confusing when there was more than one male character in the scene. I'm not sure if this was purposeful or occurred because of the translation.

It has been awhile since I have read a book that I did not want to put down, and honestly I am keeping the book on my bookshelf as a trophy.

What to say. This piece of speculative fiction is incredible.

Highlights of the writing:
  • perfect balance of realism in world building given the fantastical nature of the content
  • incredibly hard to read concepts (graphic violence) handled masterfully via the matter of fact nature in which they are delivered to demonstrate the disillusionment of the world
  • complex characters that are easy to both hate and sympathize with, further demonstrating the thesis of the novel
  • maintained the level of intensity and focus throughout the novel. It felt cohesive, continuously fascinating, crushing, and painful

Final thoughts - mild spoilers:
  • even with the graphic  concepts, this book didn’t push it to the point of sensationalism.
Following the first 3rd of the book and the factory process, the depictions of violence are slightly less so
  • it can be easy to be numb to the violence (which is another point of the novel) based upon how the characters react. It was hard to accept this part of my own humanity
  • Jasmine and Marcos’s “relationship” is an interesting depiction on the commodification of sex, relationships, and even surrogacy/adoption and the murky lines of consent within
  • capitalism is fucked

The extreme gore and violence don't feel justified because while it was trying to send a message, the message didn't feel like anything new to me. There are plenty of societal issues that can be explored with cannibalism, but I don't think this brought anything new to the table or really made me consider the ethics of certain things. It felt solely like a criticism of the meat industry that was really half-baked and didn't go much deeper. Pretty disappointing.
