The plot of this one was kind of basic and wasn't very exciting to read.

Another great Septimus Heap book from Angie Sage. I tore through all 600+ pages in three evenings, much to my daughter's dismay (since I stole the book out from under her after she went to sleep.) Young adult fiction, yes, but a good yarn!

A story filled with wonderful adventures of great characters whom one can't help but love. Throughout each book you get to see the characters grow and that is what makes this series interesting.

Darke was fun with a little suspense. This may be my favorite of the series to date. Despite its name, its still not as dark as the 2nd and 3rd Harry Potter books. It would be suitable read aloud to kids that aren't at this reading level.

Another great installment of the Septimus Heap series! As I’m reading through this series, I occasionally wonder what happened to a character or plot device that we haven’t seen for a while and, of course, Angie Sage includes them as a major part of the next book. Like at the beginning of this book, I was wondering when we’d see Marcellus again and then he showed up the next chapter. Or I wondered about Wolfboy’s family and now we’re getting answers. It feels like Angie Sage never truly leaves her characters and their details forgotten.

In this particular book, I especially enjoyed the developments in Septimus and Simon’s relationship in this book. It was a long time coming! I like Simon’s character arc through the series. Watching his fall to Darkeness and then his slow climb to being the brother we only saw in other characters’ memories is very satisfying. Some of his actions in this second book seemed a little extreme as they were happening, but this book brings a lot of perspective to the power and corruption that the Darke has. If it can turn a bumbling, bitter boy like Merrin into the BBEG for a book, then it’s totally understandable that it turned an attentive, ambitious young man like Simon into who he was in Flyte. Needless to say, I’m glad Septimus had come around to appreciating Simon’s attempts to reconcile.

Another pretty good Septimus Heap book. This series has a lot of cool magic and a really interesting plot. I enjoy the characters, and the interesting plot twists throughout the books. I'd recommend it to Harry Potter fans who are trying to find that magic again. I enjoyed it, and I hope to reread it very soon.

Awesome book, continuation of the series. Really get to know more about the Darke, which in previous books was not really explained well. Also a mixture of Alchemie and Magyk with a touch of witch. Septimus and co. save the Castle yet again.

Was my least favorite of the books. Syren was my favorite book of the series and for this book to come after was just a bit disappointing. It feels like Septimus took a step back from being mature for his age to acting a little bratty especially to his older brother. I still really enjoyed the plot of the book and probably would have loved this book when I was younger instead of being an adult. I was able to see some of the major plot points and twists before they happened but again that's because I first read the series as a child. Overall, I enjoyed the book and can't wait to read Fyre.
