I found it a bit too dramatic and too obvious and just way too much suspense and oh look another set of people being persecuted with another mystery as well and oh look an evil hateful mad women who will murder the most lovely and blah blah blah omg it’s labyrinth trilogy all over again this time much more boring dull and beaten to death I do not care about the characters I despise the vaudeville villains and it’s just awful.

Good storytelling, but I would have liked a bit more mystery. Although Mosse’s books for me also serve as a mental holiday; sometimes you just like to read and not think so hard ;-)

I feel like I should have liked this but it just wasn’t what i’d hoped. If a book is coming in just shy of 600 pages, I want to feel invested in the characters, want to feel like I KNOW the characters! Yet there were moments in the final third where I was going wait…who?!
Unfortunately it just didn’t really do any of what it set out to do. As a historical fiction, I felt like I didn’t come away informed enough about the time period it was set in. The romance line was flimsy and undeveloped. The characters lacked depth and didn’t catch my interest.
Overall it wasn’t a terrible book, just very smack bang average, and probably not one that i’ll remember very well. I’m unlikely to read the next one.

Second attempt at this book, listened on audio read by the excellent Hattie Morahan. The prose is very well written and the historical aspect is interesting but I found it frustratingly slow and just wanted it to end. Characters were limited and the ‘baddies’ one dimensional. I came away feeling I should have enjoyed it more, because of the quality of the writing, but let down by leaden pace and predictable plot.
