I listened to this as an audiobook on Audible. Like many, I read this book because I loved the show. But I quickly discovered this type of book is not my cup of tea. Maybe I just didn’t enjoy the narration and actually reading a copy would be better. But simply, I was bored.

I've watched the TV series, but wanted to read the real story. While less 'dramatic' in the entertainment sense of the word, Piper Kerman's book reveals a clearer picture of incarceration - the humanity and inhumanity of it. I enjoyed her narrative voice and the perspective she adopted in writing this - it was always fair and respectful of the circumstances under which each person mentioned was existing.
We purchased this to add to our high school biography section, and I can't wait to hear what some of the students think of her story.

Sometimes insightful, but more often than not central themes of her life were being repeated constantly along with details that seemed unnecessary or out of place. Though it doesn't follow the book too closely, the show is much better at giving all the inmates a chance to speak and the viewer to regard these women not as government prisoners, but as complex human beings.

Watched the show, then decided to read the book... I have mixed feelings. The book was easy to read and for the most part the tv series followed it closely. And while many of the series characters are different or non-existent in the book. I feel like Piper is more likeable in the book version, but the other characters are more defined, likeable (or hateable) and interesting in the TV series.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Expect it to be very different from the show. Piper is actually tolerable, for one.
