A few good moments just weren't enough to save this one for me.

I get the conceit of the Flash Gordon, John Carter-esque storytelling and while I don't think it's unfitting for this universe, I just don't find Jack Frost an interesting enough character to carry that kind of epic. This series has really lost steam after The Great Fables Crossover and I'm not surprised there's only a volume left of material.

This volume focused entirely on Jack Frost and his journey to be named a hero. There was more of a mystery genre feel to this volume so I liked it a bit more than previous volumes, but it still wasn't that great of a side story. There is one volume left in the "Jack of Fables" series, so I'm hoping that the focus returns to the true main Jack from the "Fables" graphic novels.

I enjoyed this one a lot better because it focused entirely on Jack Frost, son of Jack of the Fables. Jack Frost is a fun and likeable character, and in this book he has a series of fantastical adventures in a land not entirely unlike Barsoom .

There's not much else to say about this rather slim tale, except that for some unexplained reason Babe the miniature blue ox gets turned into a plush toy. This is not what I would call a good thing - he looks far too cute/silly as a soft toy.

The incident with Macduff (being vague here) was rather sad.

I was somewhat dreading a return to the Jack title, because I've pretty much hated most of the previous volumes. So, this was somewhat of a pleasant surprise that the whole volume was a story following Jack Frost (Jack Horner's son by Lumi, the Snow Queen). Jack Frost is a much better and more likeable character than Jack Horner, so even though this story is nothing special overall the fact that it's not Jack Horner is what gives it three stars instead of just two. It's a little odd, and it has a rather sad ending (
Spoilerpoor MacDuff, he didn't deserve that!
), but it's not bad. Glad I only have one more Jack volume left now!
