Ralph Roberts experiences significant insomnia after the death of his wife. But the lack of sleep awakens in him an ability to see a whole other layer of the world. A layer that includes both good and evil forces at battle over the souls of people.
I am a huge SK fan, but this was a snooze fest for me. It’s REALLY long. Not normally a problem for a fast reader, but the dialogue dragged and dragged. The story could have been told in half the space. I liked the main characters but couldn’t get into the little doctors. They didn’t make sense to me and I just found that storyline annoying. This was actually a DNF for me. I made it about 75% through and realized I just don’t care how it ends. Not recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. The pacing was generally good and the story made you think about life and death in new ways.

I forgot how much I liked this one until I started thinking about it now. It's one of his mid-career books, which are hit-or-miss.

This book is pretty similar to Stephen Kings other books, which is NOT A BAD THING, but I just think comparatively, it's not as good as some of this other novels that I have read. I did enjoy the plot and how the story progressed, and it had the typical mystery of any of King's novels. I honestly just find the book to be so creative.
SpoilerJust the amount of planning that had to happen to make all those connections, keep track of all those objects, colors, powers, and people. The minute details, and the presentation of those details like the moment we realize Susan Day dies... the delivery there was great. I am still confused about the child that they saved, what was his reason d'etre? So a lot was tied up at the end, which is great (thank you) but I am not sure I fully understood that. The ending was super sweet and sad and had all the feels <3
To summarize, great read, but similar to other books I've read by King.

There's a big difference in reading this book when you're 30 and reading this book when you're 59. That difference in perspective made it a worthwhile re-read.

It was a good story, don’t get me wrong, but it was way too long. I usually love King’s details in his stories but in this particular book I did mind it a lot of the times. Still, only King can write this brilliant a story so he deserves the world.
