the good: beautiful artwork (cannot believe a person can draw like that?? the detail and emotion it invoked was so powerful). simple but effective story that will make you depressed but simultaneously heal you. loved getting to see more of shelly than in the movie! while i admire the movie’s choice to keep eric’s life before he died more of a mystery, i think the inclusion of the flashbacks helped you grieve alongside eric. she veers into magic pixie dream girl territory, but it’s to be expected when thinking of the context.
speaking of eric, i struggle to think of another character who makes me feel the way that he does. brandon lee brought so much to the role, but his warmth, gentleness and goodness works in tandem with the harsh and unforgiving violence he commits just effectively on the page. i also really enjoyed the more supernatural elements here (ex. the crow, his time in purgatory, etc) which were not utilized very effectively in the 2024 remake.
the bad: the revenge plot felt underbaked and i wish there was more time dedicated to eric and sherri. sarah and eric in the movie never fail to make me weep, and while i still think it’s effective here, i don’t think she made enough of an impact for me to care about a resolution to her story. some of the lines are a little cheesy/corny. i usually thrive on this kind of thing but some of the religious metaphors got old even for me.
all in all i think the movie tells the story in a more effective way narratively speaking, but o’barr’s heart and soul is so evident on every page of this, which is an experience you can’t really replicate.

I loved it. It was sad, lonely, touching, and so many intense feelings.
I love the art style and how genuine it is. I could feel the pain and the struggle of the author through his art, which is, to say the least, very intense.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it was too intense for me. I wasn't expecting it to affect me like this. Maybe if I read it while on a different path in life, I would not have been as affected.

This feels like a rough draft, the movie refined the story a lot.
Even though I must have reread every page at least once and then spent another 15 seconds staring sublimely at the illustrations, I read this in one sitting, simply blown off this mortal coil from the complete, captivating celestiality of this comic.
An absolutely gorgeous, heartbreaking, and ruthless graphic novel. Knowing O'Barr's past that led to his creation of The Crow added to the intensity of reading it. It is a must-read for fans of the genre, and I am so happy to have gotten my copy signed by him.
