Gosh I wanted to like this book so much because it was such an interesting premise, but unfortunately that was all. I found so many things problematic about the book it’s not even worth going through them all. I was terribly disappointed.

Maybe the meaning of the story went right over my head but I feel like that had no depth? It was such an interesting concept that could have allowed for some really beautiful descriptions of people and places but it just….didn’t? I really don’t see the purpose in this having happened to a 9 year old who then doesn’t have a family the rest of her life. I did not believe her at all when she said it was worth it at the end. Most all of the human connections she had were these really surface level obsessions with men that I couldn’t have cared less about. Like really….what was the point of that book?
Interesting/Meh. An interesting premise, with an OK middle, and a not-so-great/complete ending. I read the audio book and really appreciated the narrator because she did various accents and inflections in her voice to help distinguish the many different characters that Aubrey encounters in her many journeys.
ughhhhhhhhhh. i wanted to like this so so bad. the concept is so good. the execution was just meh. i felt like she had something good going in the beginning with the plot but then it kind of fell flat and felt repetitive and then sorta too abstract. overall 2.5 stars.

Gosh this was just so long. It’s an intresting plot but felt extreamly dragged on and predictable at times. Loved the short chapters. Again, fascinating concept I just don’t love the execution.

Not a fan of how this author writes about cultures that aren't white. Too many uses of the word "chattering" to describe the sound of other languages that the main character doesn't understand, and too many situations where she's a uniquely strong and impressive white, blonde, French woman among brown people who are in awe of her. Lots of little moments where things could have been written with more grace. It rubbed me the wrong way. 4.5 hours in and I'm ditching it.
