Shakespeare’s English is difficult to read, but it’s worth the effort.
A good attempt to challenge social, cultural and “traditional” norms and tendencies in regards to relationships, power, authority, artificial stimulants (it’s in there) and many other key tenets in society.
I don’t care or like the narrative in its left. I don’t care for the two main characters much either, but I was disappointed in learning their fate. Seemed inevitable, however, but I did have more of an interest in the story’s sub-plots, as he reader can see how that drove the unfolding of the “2 star-crossed lovers’” actions and fate. Which was ironic. I could critique their rash, hormonal teenage actions, but let’s be honest that is the reality for most teenagers. Anyway the structure and prose was beautifully written with the language and style of the play being quite a unique style in comparison to Shakespeare’s other works. There’s so many interesting and intricate aspects of culture which Shakespeare neatly slipped in to this story. This story’s relevance and resonance is not restricted to the time when Shakespeare published it, not is it restricted to the people who choose to read it. I think it’s an important piece of historic literature. One can draw your own conclusions from all its symbolism, however the fate of the 2 lovers says it all. It’s a clear representation of how Shakespeare’ attempted to depict the sad and harsh reality of love in any age or era.
