I believe I read this in highschool, or at least I have vague recollections of people acting parts out in class; but I didn't really remember much other than "Romeo, Romeo, Where for art thou Romeo?" When a friend of mine showed me he had the annotated version, I jumped at the chance to read it again, with the help of the annotations of course. I felt like a giddy idiot reading this book again because of how much I loved it. I loved the language, I loved the masked humor, I loved the forbidden love, I loved it all. Had it not been a friends book I was borrowing I probably would have read it again the minute I finished.
We all know the story of the two star-crossed lovers who are forbidden to be together because of their families. But after reading it again six years after graduating high school, it means so much more to me now. I can appreciate the humor and the way the language rolls off the tongue. I can relate to the feelings of young love that are expressed by the two main characters. It was a beautiful story to read again as an adult, and has sparked a new hunger in me to read more of Shakespeare's work. I feel as though I've been missing out on the best, worst kept secret ever.

April 2021: Reading this again to teach to my students this term—struck this time around by the language of the play. I recently watched the National Theatre's new filmed production of the play which drew me to the intensity of the language even more. I can report that the play no longer gets on my nerves.
My 22 year old thoughts, 2020: Re-read this again for my teacher training, and I am wrapped up in ideas around the lives of adolescents and the constraints they feel are on them. This play explores two VERY young people whose lives are dictated by forces outside themselves and yet historically have been viewed as teens whose deaths are driven by blind love. Big "hmmmm!" on my end.
My 15 year old thoughts: Wonderfully written, I mean, come on, it's Shakespeare. But I must say, Romeo and Juliet get on my nerves, but the play is genius.
