2.5 / 3 stars?

I will still keep reading O'Leary, though this was not one of my favorites. Not as bad as the Road Trip, tho!

This book is more of a typical romance than some of O'Leary's previous publications. I liked the rural hotel setting, but it was pretty predictable and has more focus on sex. It also was really slow to get misunderstandings addressed, etc. But I liked the characters and enjoyed the read, so I'll give it 3 stars.

CW: some profanity, bedroom scenes (not highly descriptive, though)

Oh man, she’s done it again. Beth O’Leary literally never misses for me and this was no exception to that rule. This book really got me out of the reading slump that I’ve been in so much so that I had to force myself to put it down before bed, which is something that hasn’t happened to me in a while.

I liked how much this book focused on romance. I feel like a lot of Beth O’Leary books are a bit more ensemble focused with romance being an aspect and I’ve always liked that about her books, that she doesn’t neglect side characters, but I really liked in this book how we got to see Lucas and Izzy‘s relationship grow and we got to see them truly open themselves up to one another. Not to say the cast of characters was lacking. Everybody who works at the hotel was an absolute delight with Mandy being quite the stand out for me. I could’ve used a little bit more Arjun, but his interactions with Ollie were pretty fulfilling on their own. I always love how Beth O’Leary gives her characters communities instead of singular friends. Both Lucas and Izzy had full-fledged lives outside of their relationship to each other and that always makes for a stronger love story in my opinion. They also were just interesting people on their own with complex and layered pasts and issues that they both had to work through in order to be with each other. I really liked how it wasn’t just one person that had work to do. they both grew a lot over the course of this book and I just enjoyed seeing that so much.

This book was so warm, funny - frustrating at points, and I really only am taking a bit of a point off for the extended miscommunication trope. If I had to forgive that trope in a book, it would be this one because I understand how it contributed to the plot and the characters’ motivations and the key here is that they both learn from their mistakes here and there was a moment where they decided very intentionally to not let miscommunication get the better of them anymore and that really made a difference for me so while I still didn’t love it all the way through, I understand why it was used and I really really liked the resolution of it which is more than I can say for most books that have miscommunication in them.

Wow, I am really gushing about this book. It just really hit the spot for me right now and I was in literal tears of joy at the end so thank you Beth again for a wonderful read and I truly cannot wait for the next book you release.
