Wonderful, rambling, nonlinear, stream of consciousness, smattering of the life of a woman I would love to have coffee with.
I listened to it. Patti reading her own words in her own accent is perfect. Then, I bought a hard copy because it just isn't a book to listen to. It must be wandered through, again. Picked up and flipped open to this spot and that one. It's one of the few books that I need to own this way.

The reflections on change (from seemingly small to huge things), on relationships and death, in this book were extremely affecting. there were parts that dragged a bit for me, so i didn't devour this book as voraciously as Just Kids and at times I had to force myself to get through a particular passage. Still, I love Patti's writing style and the way she sees the world, and am glad of our fortunate chance to get another glimpse of that.

I thought I would not like this as much as Just Kids because it lacks the strong linear timeline of that book. But I loved this book so much. Patti's Smith's prose is incredible, like her poetry. The narrative gave me a window into an artist's inner and outer life, so different from my own. I also really liked her older woman's perspective, with her late husband and grown children as cherished memories but not driving her current agenda. I highly recommend the audiobook with the author reading.
