tbh i did not like this book compared to the first one. The best parts of the book were the last 20 pages or so. The book felt like a filler. And then ended with chani dying duke killing himself (or so we think) alia boy crazy and waiting a zbie version of a man whose def wayyyy to old for her… idk the book was weird

This book was kind of a bumpy ride for me, but I ended up completely loving it. You can really see how George Lucas made Star Wars at the end of this one haha.

I absolutely loved this book. I feel like the themes were very well explored and even though the book showed the flaws of Paul I really enjoyed seeing how his actions affected him and others.

A rocky start but give it some time and it will start getting good around the halfway point!

The external political plotting was not very interesting, the good bits where Paul's introspection. E.g. what he is and what has been done in his name, how he feels trapped by the universe, forced down a path of lesser evils.

Going blind but still able to see with future-vision was very badass

imagine being a teenager in the 70's and seeing your fave teenage hero grow up to be a imperialist, genocidal, mentally unstable, selfish, totalitarian, trapped in his own mind and nihilistic adult, that was prob traumatizing

.

Dune Messiah is very needed to give context to Paul's role in the grand scheme of things, he is a horrible man that has caused immense pain and suffering across the universe but in a way you (or at least I) feel a bittt bad for him bc it's not like he wanted to become this bigger than life figure. I very much enjoyed seeing him struggle with the visions and the outcome they'll bring but deciding that there are bigger horrors out there, he is a literal pawn to the jihad and the path that he takes is one he can't escape uggghh it was such a gloomy perspective i love to see it.

The book is very focused on politics and plots and alliances and tbh sometimes it felt a little dense ALTHOUGH that may possibly hopefully be my fault because every time i picked it up i went back 3 pages just to make sure i was understanding everything as best as I could, I may have tried a little too hard lol, but even without it you can tell this book isn't concerned with action or war; it's a cerebral and philosophical look at this empire that has its people in such a tight grip they won't  even be allowed to have a constitution or a goverment and brainwashes people into accepting a "god" as their ruler cuz separation of religion and state?.. never heard of her.

The only characters that are given plenty of time in the story are Paul obviously, Alia and Hayt/Duncan and honestly im not mad abt it; those two were interesting and fun to read (although their romance is the hardest sell ever), everyone else is given some spotlight but never to their level, even Irulan whom i thought was gonna have a bigger part on the story completely vanished after the halfway point.

That is part of my other gripe w this book, it feels a lott like a epilogue to Paul and a prologue to Leto and Ghanima, i wouldn't call it a filler book tho. And just to get it out of the way i was also kind of annoyed that the conspirators were mostly taken out off-page. But overall i reaallyyy enjoyed this book with it's politics and shocking last 100 pages, i ate it up so bad
