The first three novellas weren’t bad, but they felt a little rushed and left some gaps that were never answered later on. The romantic aspect in particular didn’t fully click for me until the last novella, and then it finally made sense. Even with some sloppy writing here and there, I still got hooked because I was already fond of Celaena and eager to know more about her past.

I knew the devastating parts were coming, but that didn’t make them any less painful to read. This is a book full of betrayals, one after another, and it really shows the harsh, lonely path that shaped her into the Celaena we meet in Throne of Glass. I especially liked the healer and the mute master, though being novellas, we didn’t get to see enough of them.

I strongly recommend not skipping The Assassin’s Blade, no matter the order you choose to read the series. Whether before or after Throne of Glass, it adds depth, heartbreak, and context to Celaena’s story.
