Somehow this didn’t grip me at all. I feel like there could have been so much more to this story but the way it is it‘s just predictable and the characters remain quite shallow.

So I actually read book 2, a while back and I really loved it and this didnt disappoint

Without any spoilers, it's about this girl who has been shamed and pointed at all her life because of her face. She kind of now hides her feels and doesnt trust anyone but still at the same time have made something amazing of herself.
Then she is caught in a kiss cam with a rather hot detective and things from there kind steamed off.

I had some issues with it but it really opened my eyes to a lot of things.

I loved this so much! I love Ford and Gina so much together they make a great couple.

EDIT - reread Nov 2020 - I did enjoy this one again , but it seemed so very obvious and Ford is a dick, I'm glad he pulled his head out of his ass

2.0 Yay that Gina realizes she wants to find someone that thinks she’s beautiful as-is, but super frustrated that the whole book seemed to focus on how unattractive she is. Just because Ford managed to see her appeal still didn’t help how much I disliked all the other people in her world (except for her brothers/family and Ford’s family).

This was a cute fluff read. A little bit romancey, a little bit mystery, a little bit sexy. The heroine is a great gal, but kinda looks like her grand dad in the nose department. (oopsie) .

I didn't love how much the author focused on her looks, but I guess that was the story in itself, and the end result was a good parable.

This was a cute story. A modern ugly duckling story. Ford is the hot cop. Gina is the ugly duckling. One night, one kiss-cam and sparks fly.
There are a lot of fun moments, steamy moments, and heartbreaking moments
The only thing I didn't like was that there wasn't a lot of people there to build Gina up. Even Ford wasn't the best at making Gina feel comfortable.
The humor and steamy moments were what kept me reading this story.

After reading Tomboy a few months ago I couldn’t wait to go back and read the rest of the books in the series. I love Avery Flynn’s writing style so much and I am so glad to have found a new author to read. Butterface is the story between Ford and Gina, a cop and a wedding planner who has ties to the mob.

I love a great fake relationship trope and Flynn writes this one perfectly. Ford is on assignment and of course it is forbidden that he even remotely pursues a relationship with Gina, but that’s when the lines start to get blurry and the fake relationship turns from friendship to something more.

Flynn writes Gina’s character so perfectly. At some point in our lives we were in Gina’s shoes. And maybe we weren’t called “butterface,” but we had insecurities and vulnerabilities that cut us too. Gina is such a fierce and independent woman, but being loved by someone so perfect as Ford is just too good to be true in her opinion. Gina has to get past the fact that Ford really likes her for who she is and not because of any ulterior motives he may have. Trust is fragile and the bond that these two have is so important because without trust the foundation of any relationship just crumbles.

I really enjoyed reading this book - it had me crying on more than one occasion. I loved Ford’s huge family and even Gina’s mob-boss brothers were great. So happy to have found a great series to read!

This book got me out of my slump and while it wasn't a "5-star" it was certainly a great book. I loved the mystery surrounding Gina's grandfather. I also loved the mafia aspect and that Gina didn't want to be a part of that. However, she knew how to take a gun apart in less than 5 minutes because that's what her and her grandfather did for fun. I loved that the heroine wasn't a traditional "beautiful" woman, but she was strong nonetheless. She had more substance in her pinky toe than most writers write about in 260 pages of a book and that is hard to come by. I liked how the hero is flawed and he knows it, he owns it and he tries to always do what's right to the best of his ability despite that. This is one of those novels that made me think while I enjoyed it and I really loved that. I have a thing about plots and storylines and that they MUST have one and this did. Well done Ms. Flynn!!

I was given an ARC by the author and NetGalley at no cost.

BUTTERFACE is the first book by Avery Flynn that I have read.

When straight-as-an-arrow Detective Ford Hartigan meets wedding planner Gina Luca, they are pressured to participate on a Kiss Cam at a wedding. They are both left feeling somewhat dazed after such a great kiss.

Ford’s bucked generations of family tradition. He’s joined the police force instead of becoming a fire-fighter and his large family will not let him forget it. He’s got something to prove and one way to do this is to bring down a crime family, one Gina’s brother’s are involved with.

Gina’s a wedding planner whose family also has connections, albeit low level ones, to organised crime. Gina’s life may be squeaky clean but she’s still a person of interest to the police.

The elements of a romantic comedy in this book are very well written. The relationship between Ford and Gina is sweet and sexy. They had fun, they provided loads of humour, the attraction between them is palpable and hot.

The dark cloud looming over this book is the characterisation of Gina. She’s spent her life being ridiculed, mocked, and judged as lacking because of her unattractive face. Her looks have made her a joke her entire life. She’s a “butterface”. I must live under a rock because I have never heard the expression before and the cruelty of it shocked me. The author’s relentless reminders throughout the book often made for uneasy reading. Frankly, it was heartbreaking.

As much as I liked Ford, I was cheering for Gina. If she had decided Ford was not the one for her, I would have happily accepted it. The only people who seemed to be always on her side were her criminal brothers. Ford’s dilemma in deciding where to draw the line between professional and personal with Gina drives a lot of the plot but for me it pales in comparison to the way Gina was not only treated but how this manifested into her own self worth.

Overall BUTTERFACE is sweet, sexy and heartwarming. It’s the first book in The Hartigan’s book series and I am looking forward to reading more about them.
