Although this is a picture book, I would recommend it for older age groups and any adults who intend to use it with children need to preread it and provide context for the story. Emotional maturity and historical context is needed.
Moderate: Death of parent
Minor: Murder and Sexual assault

I am an adult who reads picture books. I love them and indulge when I find one I am interested in. Lately, I have turned to examining what a book might say to childhood readers as well as to my adult self.
In this case, I point you to the clear review of Debbie Reese, either here on Goodreads or on her website. She indicates that this book would likely be a traumatic experience for a young FN reader. I take her point.

Told from a young girl's perspective, this is the story of a girl who is missing her mother, who is presumed to be dead. Illustrations show her mother watching over her, through various stages of the girl's life.

C’est un superbe album pour aborder la disparition des femmes autochtones au Canada.

A beautifully illustrated, wrenching story of missing and murdered Aboriginal women. Powerful; it made a bunch of adult readers tearful.
One caveat: perhaps not really for children despite its picture book format. Quite dark in theme and could be problematic for readers who are experiencing the situation themselves.

I had no idea what I picked up, wandering the library, and standing there reading in the stacks it made me cry. But this is a book for pushing white adults to wake up, not for reading to children. I agree with Debbie’s review that this could easily retraumatize a child.
