i expected it to be like any other high school drama, but it was definitely something more, a drama, a call to
What I liked:
This book doesn't pull any punches. It talks plainly about exactly what is fucked up about society today, and why problems like police violence are not just isolated incidents. The writing and the story provide some lighthearted relief throughout though, and although the subject matter is heavy, there weren't too many sections that were hard to get through, emotionally speaking.
What I didn't like:
I saw the movie before finishing the book, and I don't know if it's just because visuals are always going to be able to provide a different way of telling the story, but I found it to be more visceral somehow. The book delivered early on in terms of emotional impact, but the end didn't have the same punch the movie managed to deliver. Maybe it's because I already knew the story.
Another issue I had with the book was I felt like the cop uncle character provided too much "but not all cops" that this book could have really done without.
Overall:
I thought this was a great novel. Honestly, I'd recommend it to anyone.

“I can't change where I come from or what I've been through, so why should I be ashamed of what makes me, me?”
It is hard to express in words what I think about this book or how it made me feel. What a heartbreaking but beautiful story this is. I can understand why it is a highly-praised novel. A fantastic book that everyone should read.

Powerful, timely, gorgeously written. Starr is a beautiful example of how even the quiet among us can raise our voices against injustice. And the audiobook truly enhances the experience in wonderful and heartbreaking ways.
