I wanted to like this book, based on the hype but I found that it dragged and just didn't keep my interest. I've typed three reviews and erased each one. I won't give my thoughts on the book. I'll just log it in Goodreads and walk away. On to better books!

7/10

While fictional, this book is a good look into issues that are plaguing many communities and our country. Racism is a central player.

The overall story moves quickly and is easy to follow. The book reads very quickly.

It is classified as "young adult", maybe I'm out of touch, but there are quite a few things that I wouldn't label as "young adult", but rather just plain "adult".

Man! So much activism in such a small book, and it definitely lived up to the hype that it brought. How cute the main character was being who she was, without apologizing. That is what made this book so perfect. There were so many good friendships, controversial topics, and overall a well written book.

Definitely go grab a copy.

The Hate U Give is such an empowering book. It made me feel angry, sad and hurt all at once. The message of this book needs to be discussed more as it is so important and happens in real life. Character development, plot and writing style was spot on and it made me feel like I was witnessing everything in real life. That's how much I got transfixed into this book. I will admit, I was gonna DNF within the first 30 pages but I decided to continue and I'm so glad I did. So powerful.

borrowed a copy of this from a coworker, and i’m already planning when i can re-read my own copy and annotate it for myself!  starr felt like a mirror in many ways, and a fierce reminder that our work doesn’t stop. i appreciate the nuance that thomas presented in depicting the themes in this novel, and i feel that readers of all backgrounds can learn something from this story.
