I found the book to be an accurate representation of the caste system's effects on India and it's people. The book demonstrated the space between all people that exists, neighbors, friends, siblings, co-workers, spouses, employer/employee. However, I found that in parts many of the descriptions were contradictory and confusing.

I really enjoyed this book - though like a lot of books these days, these people's lives were kind of horrifically awful. a part of me wanted everything to wrap up nicely, though i think if it had i would have felt unsatisfied.

Book club enforced reading. Probably wouldn't have read it otherwise. I suppose I should like it because it focused so much on women's relationships but I thought the secondary characters were poorly drawn. (Indian men suck!) There was a metaphor or simile for every sentence. The plot was broadcast in the way that every time the happy upperclass pregnancy was mentioned the unhappy lower class pregnancy/abortion shadowed it. It was just too much.

This is why one reads fiction: amazing characters and story lines that resonate across time and cultures. My only regret is that I’ve had this on my shelf for so long and didn’t pick it up sooner. Will definitely be reading more by this author.

This one made me think a lot about prejudice, and class, and how much Indian food I still need to try. Mmmm, Indian food.

Vwry depressing story about India and those caught up in caste system

Give these characters a BREAK man.

A glimpse of life in India for two very different women. At least one common theme is the relentless badness of men. The plot is fairly predictable and I wish the language was tighter, but still a good read.
